6 months to improve - who wants to join me?

JamSandle · 20/05/2024 15:04

I've decided to set myself six months to really try and make some changes.

I am so so SO sick of my own shit and have identified a few key things:

  1. 6 months of therapy, the gym and nutritious food.
  2. No relationships or sex in 2024. I need to heal and grow from past experiences and build on the relationship with me.
  3. Less social media. Instead journal, read, speak to friends, yoga, meditate.

I want to truly commit the next 6 months to my growth and healing.

Do you want to join and if so, what are your priorities?

Yes I ought to do this.

Lookingforluck · 20/05/2024 20:48

I’d also like to join. I’ve always struggled on and off with anxiety but I can feel it starting to skyrocket again. I’ve tried therapy on and off (always privately) but have never held myself accountable for self improvement. I’m always living in the future with thoughts spiralling and it’s exhausting. I spoke to my DH last night and confessed that if I were to die tomorrow, I’d regret the fear and anxiety that I’ve lived with all my life. It’s just sad. I’m trying to simplify and strip back life. Be more present in the moment. Yoga, meditation and mindfulness all appeal to me but I’ve never sustained anything. How do you plan to start the meditation @JamSandle ? Are the changes you want to make significantly different from your current lifestyle?

Great thread - I started therapy, running and regular yoga 6-12 months ago and am now adding in breathwork, meditation and eating fewer upfs. Only problem is fitting everything around work and kids. I feel like a different person though - anxiety and peri symptoms gone.

Lookingforluck · 20/05/2024 21:20

@ErnestCelendine that’s really inspiring! What was your catalyst for change if you don’t mind sharing? Did you start all of this from scratch too or did you exercise a lot/practice meditation before? Any tips when starting out new habits?

WelshSmog · 20/05/2024 21:24

Ooooh, yes plz!

Midlifebutnotmiddling · 20/05/2024 21:30

This is just what I need.

WingateAndSlim · 20/05/2024 21:33

I made this very resolution myself at 7pm this evening!

For me it’s going to be:

  1. A focussed morning routine - breathing and meditation, a workout and a review of my goals and daily plan before the school rush.

  2. Daily walk with or without an inspiring podcast, just getting out and moving in the fresh air.

  3. Meal planning wholesome meals and drinking much more water than I am currently.

  4. Being aware of the times I tend to sit and scroll “to relax” and pick up my book instead. This is usually lunch time and after dinner. Getting away from my desk and eating and reading as my lunch break would be so much more beneficial.

I just hope I can stay focussed on this for six months as I feel my attention is all over the place! I’m going to stick up post it notes to remind me until it’s a habit.

From scratch.
I got to the point where something had to change (exercise first then a few months later a chance encounter with a therapist set me on that track). No dramatic triggers though.

I recommend reading Myth of Normal by Gabor Mate and listening to the Feel Better, Live More podcast.

I would love to join OP Smile some great ideas on here!

I have twins who are almost 9, a full time job, a grumpy DP and about 5 minutes to myself per day... I've been thinking for a while that something needs to change, I very rarely get time to catch my breath and just potter around. I just want some time to plan things - how to budget better, meal plan more effectively, exercise regularly - but I'm so busy chasing my tail that I never get chance Sad

My three aims will be:

  • Use my time more effectively to plan/ diarise/ organise/ arrange whatever's necessary - whether that's meals, finances, play dates, cleaning etc
  • Find regular me time - fit in the exercise that I used to enjoy, make the effort to contact friends
  • Nourish myself properly - I have around 4 stone to lose, I could lose 2 of those within six months if I put my mind to it.

@WingateAndSlim would affirmations via an app work for you as well as post it notes? I've definitely found that useful before, must start using them again!

Tanaria · 21/05/2024 06:03

I'm not starting properly with some stuff until next week, but I have a few things to do, part of which I'm already working on.

Foci are

  • a house I'm proud of living in (various repairs/ improvements needed), already working on that with a one thing a month type thinking and budget
  • weightloss and general self-care; important as I'm now officially in peri with irregular periods and want to stop feeling shit about myself
  • more creative stuff; I have a big project I'm already working on
  • more reading, which I'm already doing a good job of
  • new job, which I'm starting soon, that I really want to get stuck in

@Cinderellahasletherselfgo I’ve honestly never had success with any type of app. I’ve got meditation, workout, cleaning, notes/project apps but the problem is that when they’re closed and the phone off, I just forget about them! It’s a shame as some of them are really well thought out but ultimately, time on a phone is what I want to get away from.

I’m a real paper person and have a planner and Filofax combo that sit on my desk and serve as my external brain. The best solution for me is to have my whole day mapped out in front of me, so sticking a reminder of a habit change there or on the bathroom mirror is likely to have the most impact.

On another note - I’ve got 3 stone I want to ditch, so I’m with you on the weight loss front too!

Acinonyx2 · 21/05/2024 09:29

Thinking the same. Lose a stone. Less drinking 🤐Less random screen time as downtime. Bit more exercise. Chill, generally. A project with a 6 mo timeline that could strongly influence future work if I can just knuckle down and get it done.

I used to do a morning routine and would like to get that going again (and if I drank less that would be easier!). I recommend looking into the Miracle Morning, Hal Elrod. He really has walked the walk.

Deebee90 · 21/05/2024 09:45

Oo can I join. I’m currently on holiday on holiday and I feel the frumpiest I’ve ever been. At 34 with no kids yet this shouldn’t be happening . So my 6 months I plan to go back to the gym or if I don’t manage the gym then swimming.

get over my fear of the dentist and book in for a clean/check up

get my hair cut again and start taking multi vitamins to maintain it.

start a decent skin care routine and put on body lotion every night

i also want to put my all into getting my confidence back. Start saying yes to going out more. I’ve had enough of online dating but it seems to be the only place to find a guy currently .
