Do anti-cat spikes work?

My neighbour has a new cat. I want to keep him out of my garden.

Do anti-cat spike like these actually work?

I know all about lemons and pepper to stop cats shitting in the garden. But this isn't what I'm after. I want to stop the cat coming in at all.

Why don't you poison them then? I suppose you'd think that's the owner's fault too?

If they did eat poison or something that had recently eaten poison, such as a rat, who's fault is that?

It's your job as a pet owner to keep your animal safe.

If you don't want your cat to get runover, poisoned, eaten by a fox/dog, etc, the simple solution is to keep it safe on your property.

You can't blame anybody but yourself if your cat gets injured whilst roaming.

What is your objection to cats?

I can't leave the door of my garden office or house open w/o my neighbour's cats wandering in. I don't mind cats, but 1) I don't really want the moulting one in my house and 2) they could easily get shut or locked in.
One of them dug up one of my patio pots.
They scare the garden birds away. That makes me sad.
I trip over them if I go outside at night.

iloveeverykindofcat · 20/05/2024 16:59

Yes as a PP said that's legally dubious, but there is a harmless alternative - poles that spin, so the cat can't grab on for purchase. More complicated to fit though. A company called Katzecure came up with this.

That said, a young athletic cat will get in if they're determined to.

My cats don't like the spikes but the cat that lives at the back of us who is the reason the neighbours put the spikes up just ignores them and shits in their garden anyway

A neighbour painted anti climb paint on the fence, which seems to have worked.

My dad swore by Jeyes Fluid poured where they usually shit.

The previous owner of this house had cat proof fencing installed all round and it really works.

Please don't Jeyes fluid can kill them. I'm not a cat person but I don't want to kill them.

When we had a fox issue i sprayed white vinegar and hot chilli powder around the garden for a week. They never came back. Ddog didn't like it either so imagining it might work on cats.

What is your objection to cats?

Plenty of people object to cats. Mainly because they shit all over someone else’s property.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 20/05/2024 17:11

Honestly, if I saw you'd put them out I'd report you for cruelty. Cats bury their poo anyway so they're doing your plants a favour.

Why single out your neighbour's cat? You do realise cats roam, mostly at night. You've probably already got cats coming in and you're blissfully unaware.

By all means speak to your neighbour and encourage them to keep their cats as indoor either with a catio /or by cat proofing their garden as there are other nasty people around like yourself who could potentially injure their cat.

No they aren't doing your plants a favour, you skank. Cat shit contains all sorts of bacteria and parasites including toxoplasmosis (which is really nasty to small kids and if you are pregnant).
I don't hate cats, I have a cat that uses a litter tray in the garage. They are easy to train, just the lazy owners who can't be bothered.

Suchalicklepumpkin · 20/05/2024 17:50

I put bottles of water in various places to deter the horrible things coming into my garden. It seems to have worked.

Limth · 20/05/2024 10:52

Dammit!

Is it the case that there was something for your cat to jump off/onto either side of the spikes?

I'm looking to put them across the top of a 6ft fence (like this - full length and width, top bit of the fence completely covered) so there wouldn't be anything for the cat to leverage off.

I did exactly as per your photo. Cats just walked over them.

mountaingoatsarehairy · 20/05/2024 17:54

Put cayenne pepper in the flower beds
put little sticks in the flower beds
get a super soaker and spray cat for fun whenever you see them.
also an automatic sprinkler

not tried the Jeyes fluid as the above keeps the cats out.

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 20/05/2024 18:32

@PadstowGirl Did she really say they 'do our plants a favour'?! Yeah @brightyellowflower They did my expensive David Austin roses that my mum gifts me every birthday the world of good when they break them and dig them up to bury their shit. Your cats are not welcome and if you can't see why people don't want your scabby wandering cats on their property then you're a seriously piss poor pet owner.

AllIWantIsACuppa · 20/05/2024 18:53

Cats occasionally make a half hearted effort to bury their poo, which us poor gardeners stumble upon when weeding.

Most of the time they just leave it as it is, causing a stench and a health hazard. I wish cat fouling was seen as anti social as dog fouling. Cat owners are entitled fuckers when it comes to this!

BlackEyesLikeADollsEyes · 20/05/2024 18:54

You don't need signage for these kinds of spikes - they are not going to harm anything at all. No more than stepping on a hairbrush might.

I know, because I use them to stop cats raiding birdboxes and, before installing them, stood all 70kg of me, bare foot, on them Grin They are mighty uncomfortable but they did not wound or cause any harm. That is literally the point of them.

When legislation talks about anti climb spikes, they are talking about something much more hardcore:

Do anti-cat spikes work?
Do anti-cat spikes work?
Do anti-cat spikes work?

I use the spiky matting in your OP over my flower beds before they’re filled with plants / before the bulbs sprout and it works really well to stop them crapping in the soil. Our neighbours have loads of cats and they all shit in my garden with impunity. I have tried loads of things but the spiky mats are the best so far.

CwmYoy · 20/05/2024 21:34

I didn't say spray them with Jeyes fluid. Just splash it around where they shit because they hate the smell.

We've had success with the sonic repellers.
