If I want to paint a dark wooden cupboard that is currently painted a dark colour, a much lighter colour what do I do? Do I need a wood primer? What do I buy and what do I do? Do I paint with brushes or a roller? Help please!!

I would sand/rough up the dark painted surface then prime it with white wood primer. Might need a couple of coats. Then undercoat. Then a couple of top coats. Lightly sand each coat so there's a rough surface for the next coat of paint to stick to.

I'd use a mixture of roller and brush - roller for the main/flat areas and brush for any detailing and getting into the nooks and crannies.

Don't paint hinges. Either masking tape them off or remove them.

Clean the roller/brushes after each use otherwise they go rock hard.

I painted a red cupboard recently. It was an Ikea one. 3 coats of a good primer and 3 coats of white paint. Just used a smallish brush and took my time. Came out great.

Watching with interest. I have a lot of chipped white wood but also a lot of gloomy old dark wood.

Thanks everyone. Someone has suggested I can use white emulsion instead of primer or is that a bad idea?

Just to save money as I already have white emulsion
