Party bags at School?

Oneverytiredmummy · 18/05/2024 17:27

Hello! Sorry didn't know where to post this so hopefully it is ok in chat...

Now I don't know if this is a new thing that is expected of parents but I do not remember it ever being a thing when I was younger.

DS (5yo) has come back with quite a few party bags from school this term and a couple from beginning of the school year, all given by children who's birthday it is. It seems the majority of parents are sending party bags in with balloons, fidget spinners, sweets, chocolates, cake, crisps etc etc.

I thought it was a lovely idea but as DS birthday approaches and he is in school on his birthday this year is it expected to take little party bags?

He's not having a big party this year just a family gathering (partly due to lack of money). Ive added up how much it would cost to take these party bags with little nick nacks in and it's quite a lot.

Would I be a scrooge if I didn't send any? Or does anybody have a cheaper alternative if this is the done thing these days?!

TIA 😀

Literally never heard of this. Some kids bring in cupcakes to hand out at my DCs primary, but that's it. If you want to do something can you just make a batch of cupcakes to distribute, or does the school not allow that due to allergies etc?

TeaandScandal · 18/05/2024 17:30

No, I’ve never heard of this either.
Tbh, it sounds like school should be clamping down on it, it has the capacity to get way out of hand.

mummyh2016 · 18/05/2024 17:33

Ours lets you take a bag of sweets into share (something individually wrapped like the haribo mini bags or maom stripes). If you wanted to do something I'd just do that. No one needs a bag of tat to take home.

Autumn1990 · 18/05/2024 17:34

Just send a cake in or some cup cakes.

I'd do this. Go to Home Bargains or similar and buy a few packs of those small packets of sweets (maybe get a variety because some kids can't have ones containing gelatine) and the kids will be happy. No need for the tat that will be lost or broken with five minutes anyway.

this sounds horrific! Are these children not having parties, just giving out party bags?? Not heard of this thankfully. I imagine most people are going along with it because everyone else is - many would probably be relieved if it stopped!

Sunshineclouds11 · 18/05/2024 17:39

We just do little mini bags of sweets

SherlockHomies · 18/05/2024 17:40

I'm surprised the school allows this.

My DS is 22 and sweets/cakes etc were banned here when he was in primary.

VelvetTurtle · 18/05/2024 17:42

This wouldn't be allowed in our school the most they allow is a single celebration sweet per child if someone brings in a tub.

DinnaeFashYersel · 18/05/2024 17:44

Never heard of this and surprised school haven't clamped down on this - allergies etc

papadontpreach2me · 18/05/2024 17:45

This happened in ds school, enough for every child.

Then more at the party.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 18/05/2024 17:45

I've a had a few bring in nothing and a few bring in those mini haribo sweets in a multipack . I've never heard of party bags at school only after a party

Blondeshavemorefun · 18/05/2024 17:48

Never heard of party bags being given out at school

R and yr 1 we have our cakes /sweets

But school policy has changed and not allowed any more

As we waited outside school gates to give cakes out

Shinyandnew1 · 18/05/2024 17:53

I have been teaching a long time and have never known party bags at school. Frankly, this would be a right pain and my head would probably tell the parents not to if they tried this!

Give party bags out at parties!

NotTheReal · 18/05/2024 17:56

Never heard of party bags at school. At our school we do sweets, mini packs of haribo for example.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/05/2024 18:02

Never heard of this and I have 3 children in primary school. Very occasionally they come home with a little packet Haribo if it’s someone’s birthday. I never do this. I don’t want teachers / parents getting pissy about sweets.

I’d only do party bags if we were having a party.

Oneverytiredmummy · 18/05/2024 18:09

Thanks everybody for your replies.
I'll check with the teachers first. Cupcakes or sweets will probably be a hit so I'm sure I can pick some cheap ones up.
Thanks again!
I'm glad I'm not the only one that's never heard of this! 😂

I’ve never heard of this. Christ, I hope it doesn’t catch on, DD loves party bag tat and I don’t need more of it in my house!

ProfessorGambol · 18/05/2024 18:22

Kids in my Reception class sometimes bring in party bags. We try to discourage it. A little pack or haribo or a lollipop or chocolate bar is absolutely fine.

MillshakePickle · 18/05/2024 18:23

Bags of haribo and choc buttons (the big multi packs) the left overs go to aftershock club.

Sconeswithnutella · 18/05/2024 18:28

This seems to be a relatively new thing but I have seen it a lot over the last couple of years. Although at my school it’s more likely to be a drink, bag of crisps and some sweets. Our rule is that everything has to be individually wrapped and opened only when with parents. I normally get one of those big Haribo’s with lots of mini bags in, cheap and the kids love them.

Sprogonthetyne · 18/05/2024 18:31

At my kids school, it's a mini bag of haribo or similar, which feels like plenty.

Longma · 18/05/2024 19:01

Autumn1990 · 18/05/2024 17:34

Just send a cake in or some cup cakes.

Only send cake if it has been pre-cut and wrapped into individual portions before you take it in. We don't have time to cut it up. At our school, the children aren't allowed to eat it in school and have ti carry it outside to meet their parents first, so it needs to be easy to carry.

We haven't had any child bring in party bags but treats in their birthday is fairly commonplace, though not everyone, it's normally a small pack of Haribo (they do vegetarian and halal versions), a cupcake/bun or a small fun size chocolate bar,

sweettomato · 18/05/2024 22:01

We do sweets on the door at home time.
