Lost bag on train

Long story short, my DD left a backpack on last train from Aberdeen to Edinburgh last night. Predictably contains precious things. Was pushed under seat and not many people left on train. Went to station within half an hour, no help available. Nothing this morning, lost property form filled in.
Anyone got positive stories of such things being found? She is in bits…

About 15 years ago, I left my wallet on a tube train...contained bank card, driving licence and a £20 note. Cancelled cards and assumed I've never get it back. Then I received a letter from the lost property department....had to go somewhere in central London and collect it. Everything including the £20 note was still in wallet. I was absolutely amazed!

Fivefootoffun · 18/05/2024 10:40

Yes, something very similar on the team Edinburgh (but same lost property form etc(. We had to go to a depot and collect the next day. There was a number to call as well as the online form I’m sure?

Fivefootoffun · 18/05/2024 10:40

Ps - ours was 2 iPads and other valuables

Fivefootoffun · 18/05/2024 10:41

Sorry - tram!

Comedycook · 18/05/2024 10:44

I'll also add that I never even bothered reporting it as lost. Just assumed I'd never see it again.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/05/2024 10:46

Hopefully it will have been found at the end of the day by the cleaners. Hopefully it did t spark a security incident!

quietpink · 18/05/2024 10:48

Yes, got off train at York and forgot my suitcase. Train went to Edinburgh and they said I'd have to go there to get it if it was found.
It was found and I travelled to get it.

@Toddlerteaplease , not heard of a security incident last night! If it was found by cleaners last night, they hadn’t handed it in this morning, which is a worry.

I work for TfL and finding lost property for a customer is amongst the best parts of the job.

The biggest hugs I've got is reuniting people with their passports.

Finding bank cards or jewellery is usually a lost cause because of size and ease of someone else putting thrm in their pocket.

Recently a woman left her box of nail colours on my station. She had been having a very bad day in her personal life and absent mindedly left them on a bench before boarding a train. She's a nail technician! I got a hug for that.

What I find is that people are either just clumsy or there's a whole story as to why they lose things.

Podgedodge · 18/05/2024 11:37

Well, sadly my DD feels it’s somehow my fault…🙁

Gulbekian · 18/05/2024 11:40

Why on earth does she think it's your fault?

Toddlerteaplease · 18/05/2024 11:48

How on earth is it your fault?

Podgedodge · 18/05/2024 11:53

Oh, as I say she’s in bits. She feels no one helped her coming home from Uni, she’s right, she is so independent she seemed like everything was under control. I would have helped, maybe I didn’t make it clear enough. I feel guilty! And so sorry for her. Am just so hoping she gets it back…

Sorry, that wasn’t the point of my post, was sort of responding to GreggsSteakBake, that’s what my DDs story would have been!

I think as she left it there's a reasonable chance of getting it back. I left a bag on a train as was chatting to a colleague and got off but then I got it back at lost property later. Had to say what was in it to get it back.

If not and contents are worth a bit might be covered on home insurance. I am sorry she is so upset, you have all been through so much the past few years. Sometimes its the straw that broke the camels back. Hope she gets it back.

Penguinsa · 18/05/2024 12:22

It might be worth explaining there are precious things inside.

GreenShady · 18/05/2024 12:24

Is lost property still at Baker Street these days?

GreenShady · 18/05/2024 12:25

It can take a while to make its way there but your DD can fill in a form in the meantime

MujeresLibres · 18/05/2024 12:48

I've lost both an iPod and a digital camera (separately) and had them both returned to me. I once had my handbag stolen at a party with friends and their friends and never had it found though. Hope your daughter gets it back.

Redburnett · 18/05/2024 12:49

She needs to complete all possible online lost property forms for anywhere the bag might have ended up, including the train company one, and include a photo of the bag if possible. I know nothing about Scottish trains but if the train might have gone to another major city before it was found then check that website aswell for lost property info etc.
I left a laptop on a train table once (fell asleep, woke at last minute and got off in a hurried daze). I was amazed to get it back. I think I completed three different online lost property forms for various companies/stations. The laptop should have ended up in Manchester where the train terminated, but it ended up in Newport (train was a Transport for Wales one). I went on a day trip to collect it and had to pay the princely sum of £2 to get it back (plus rail fare obviously). The lost property office was piled high with rucksacks and backpacks.........
I wish her luck but I do think that the vast majority of people are honest so there is a reasonable chance she will get it back in time.
Also if you have household contents insurance check if valuable items are covered for 'all risks' which might make a claim possible.

Podgedodge · 18/05/2024 12:57

Thanks for all your hopeful and helpful messages. The train terminated at Edinburgh, so DD was told a deep clean would be done there and bag found if there. Have also had friend pop to Aberdeen in case somehow stayed on train and went back there, but nothing found. Filled in Missing luggage online form, apparently all Scottish lost luggage is redirected to Glasgow at some point. Being weekend makes it harder as individual lost property lines not open. Will check home insurance, thanks for recommendations, more personal items, driving license, house keys etc. And her heartbreak. She knows it’s ultimately her responsibility but is so, so sad. I know she’s lashing out, but you know the saying, you’re only has happy as your saddest child.
