What could we plant in 2 of these long planters?

At work (I'm a TA in EYFS).

Something low maintenance that the children can be involved in would be great. I just have no idea what I'd be looking for.

Bonus points if we can grow from seed & watch the whole growing process.

Thank you!

If you’re after sensory then herbs are good (rosemary, basil, parsley, chives etc) but sometimes not easy to grow from seed. If you’re after the growing cycle then peas, beans, nasturtiums, dwarf sunflowers would be a good bet.

Lettuces and radishes are great to grow from seed. And they can eat the end result.

Wild flowers from seed for a pretty display.

Herbs for longer lasting, but sensory effect.

Nasturtium is a great shout. Seeds are cheap, they grow a mile a minute, flowers are edible, and they will reseed for years to come. You may want a dwarf variety, or you could pop some canes in and let them wind around that.

They also need very little care.

Beetroot?

It might be a bit late to plant some veg from seed now but you have a good foundation for next year.

We have a big planter with potatoes in atm - I wanted to split it in four, and grow four things, but missed my opportunity there 🙄

Maybe we could try one herbs and one flowers that'll definitely grow?

You could still do peas or dwarf french beans now from seed .. i get best results soaking overnight...
Then planting in little pot (like yoghurt) or even egg box..
Then planting out.... (You can weigh the seeds before and after soaking)

Dwarf beans need no staking..

Otherwise radish is quick ..also rocket!

Thanks so much!

I'm off through town so will pop into Boyes armed with this thread and see what they have.
