How long in Amsterdam?

I’m planning to go away for a few days in Amsterdam.
I have no idea about how big the city is and how much there is to do (bar the canals and museums) 😳😳

So how long would you say is a good length of time there Wo getting bored?

Bonus point if you have any advice on what not to miss 😁😁

How long is a piece of string??
But for a first visit, at least 3 or 4 days.
Don't miss the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House (all need to be booked in advance, online). Don't pack them all, in together - strictly one per day, then fill the time with just wandering around areas like The Nine Streets.
Maybe a canal tour by boat?
Rembrandt's House is interesting too.

Thank you.
Doing only one thing a day is a good advice too!

I ended up staying 5 years and didn't see it all!

It's a great city, so much to do, but also plenty of other lovely towns and cities and beaches close by to explore. It's a great place for a long weekend and an ideal base for a 2 week holiday.

We did 4 nights in April last month…..the highlight was cycling around the tulip fields outside the kuerkenhof in a beautiful sunny day ….we stayed a 5 minute train ride out of central station…which literally halved the cost of accommodation…. We did Anne frank and Heineken factory but apart from that just mooched all the different areas …..stopping at street cafes along the way ….felt just the right amount of time

Kitkat1523 · 18/05/2024 11:34

Tip..Anne frank house books up months in advance

We did 4 days but DD has ASD so we minimised how much we did per day and added plenty of breaks.

Unless you are a great art lover I would just do one of the big art museums, we did the Van Gogh and loved it. We also did smaller bits, the Rembrandt House, a Golden Age mansion, walking around Vondel Park.

The Jewish quarter with the museums is great and they have a brilliant WWII museum. I think they just re-opened another one.

I could have stayed longer and used it as a base but unfortunately school holidays are only so long.

Thanks lovely
Thank you for all the ideas.

@queenofthewild yep I can see how you’d still find lots to see and do even after so many years!

I would also add that it’s a great place for sitting in squares with a coffee or wine and relaxing. We like the Leidesplein area.

Now that would fit me perfectly!!

Where did you stay please? Sounds ideal as accommodation is expensive. Were trains regular and reasonable? Thanks

Lengokengo · 05/11/2025 14:25

As little as possible! Rijksmuseum is nice But too big. Aim to spend 2 hours max there. Van Gogh museum much better, perhaps 2 hours there and is a nice place to eat too. Tickets in advance for both! You are probably too late for Anne Frank house tickets. They are snapped up in seconds.

don’t stay in Amsterdam if you like canals/ tea shops etc. Stay at Leiden which is much much nicer more historical/ smaller vastly cheaper and only 30 mins away by train.

Second Leiden, much more chilled. We go at least once a year to see dd. We do one big touristy thing each time, which her Amsterdam native bf loves, as the only time hes done them was on school trips. Trams are excellent, tap on and off. The zoo is good and the two museums (microbia? )Are fun. The restaurant is good-modern dutch/european) We are also working our way through the beers at Gollum.
