Hacks for moving house

Moving house next week with 3 little ones! They will all be in childcare. We have people coming on Wednesday to pack the house up before we move on Friday. Does anyone have any pearls of wisdom or hacks to make it a bit easier? Thanks

Have a bag of useful stuff and a few bits of furniture with you in the car, ready to get out as soon as you arrive. Things to assist you whilst unpacking:
kettle
tea bags & coffee
milk
biscuits/energy bars
teaspoons
Mugs
Tea towel, dish cloth and washing up liquid
A few plates, knives and forks
Loo roll
A few kitchen chairs and a small table
kitchen roll and several packs of cleaning wipes

Came onto the thread to suggest this.
Have lots of mugs for the removal people.

Put the hoover in the car with dusters & cleaning cloths, then as soon as you get the keys you can go straight in a hoover through & wipe down surfaces like window sills. If you are likely going to change the bathroom, buy a cheapish new toilet seat to fit when you move in to put you on until you change the suite. Investigate local takeaways & store the numbers in your phone so you can order a meal on the first night. Take your grill pan from your oven, I arrived at my new home to no grill pan.

I'm moving next week and so far what's really helped is:

-Get rid of everything not wanted/needed
-Put everything into baskets. So all cleaning products are in a basket, this can be lifted straight out of box and put under sink in kitchen. Ditto small kitchen appliances, my toiletries, the dc's school books
-One basket has disposable plates/cups etc, and I've cooked some marinaded chicken breasts, sliced them and frozen them. We'll have these on moving day for dinner in wraps (I don't like takeaway) and I won't have to worry about washing up either.
-Clothes are staying in chest of drawers and they'll be moved (carefully) like this, so no unpacking. The same for drawers in dressing tables. j
-Everyone is taking a small hand luggage case with their essentials. Things like devices, chargers, medication, diary, pyjamas

All the best OP!

If you are having packers make sure they don’t pack your rubbish! They literally pack everything.

Probably a bit late but I threw money at it

So I got a handyman to arrive on the day. He did stuff like hung pictures, built beds, put light fittings up, bathroom cabinets etc as me and my dad were bringing other stuff in

I did the general unpacking of clothes, crockery, personal stuff. Dad brought heavier stuff in with his friend while giving the jobs to the handyman

It wasn't that expensive and it made a huge difference

Moved (I live alone) from a 3 bed house to a 2 bed (fair amount of stuff). I got the keys at midday and everything was done down to beds made and pictures on the walls by 9pm

Morning of move, tuck your dc’s bed sheet corners over their covers and roll up pillow, teddy and all into a bundle. You can slide it into a black sack. You can unroll the bundle onto the bed in the new house and when nighttime comes at least their bed will be the one thing that smells and feels right.

Take photos of your meters as you leave and as you arrive
Then email them to yourself with title last meter reads @ x house and first meter reads @ y house

Don’t forget to keep a large flat headed screwdriver & meter box key in with the kettle box etc for opening meter boxes and for lifting water meter lids.

Arrange post redirection now if you haven’t already. Leave few pre printed sticky new address labels for new owners for anything that gets missed by the redirection.

Pack your own underwear and bedside drawer if you don’t want the packers doing it ;)

Empty inside bins or they will pack the rubbish too.

If you have a gas bbq or patio heater they can’t take the gas, so leave room for the gas bottles in your car.
