Smelly teenage boys

GlitteringUnicorn · 16/05/2024 18:25

Hi I am at my wits end and am asking for advice please.
Two teenage boys aged 13 and 15. They shower everyday and wear clean clothes every day (top to bottom except blazer which is washed weekly). They wear deodorant.

Yet despite this by the end of the day they pong! (They smell fresh in the morning).I drove them home tonight- both have had sport today (and wore freshly laundered sports kit for it) and they stink so badly I had to open the window on the way home. I admit I have a sensitive nose but still!

Anyone got advice? It does seem worse in sports kit- and whilst they have done sport and sweated I do wonder if their school sports kit "clings" to smell a bit and if I need to wash it in something else?

It seems a bit mean to tell them they stink when I have no solution.

Thanks

Get them to shower in antibacterial soap, direct to the skin. Use Mitchem deodorant. Put a bit if disinfectant in the wash, maybe pre soak it in odour remover and use antibacterial washing powder.

I was going to say this. Despite all this though teenage Ds still stinks at the end of a sports session. He plays a lot of football and his feet are so grim 🤢 (despite me telling him to wash them well in the shower with soap, clean socks, shoe and foot spray etc etc). I think teenage boys are generally very sweaty. 😥

Soap and a flannel, they need to scrub with the soapy flannel to make a difference.

may need to soak sports clothes in bio powder before washing. You can get sports wash for clothes too

L'eau d'adolescence! Nothing quite like it.
Sorry, no advice. Just empathy and watching for hints.

Teen boys are like this. Sorry.

Dettol laundry liquid helps, as does Dettol anti bacterial soap.

Many deodorants are "just" perfume rather than antiperspirants so check that.

I taught secondary for many years and after exercise teen boys do just smell.

LaPalmaLlama · 16/05/2024 18:35

For sports kit, cold soaking in water and white vinegar before washing seems to help

DancingNotDrowning · 16/05/2024 18:39

This is teen boys.

it gets better when they become interested girls/boys and start showering 3 times per day.

In the meantime hot wash for sports kits, towels, bedding, underwear and shirts. Vinegar rinse works well.

trainers need to be soaked and washed with alarming regularity and try some charcoal inserts in shoes overnight.

Do they like swimming? DS swims 3 times a week (he's 13) and I notice the difference when he doesn't go. I think the chlorine must kill more of the bacteria.

MigGirl · 16/05/2024 18:58

Oh and yes at school they all smell. I feel sorry for our teachers when they have the boys after PE.

AddictedtoCrunchies · 16/05/2024 18:59

Wash armpits daily with medicated soap and use stick/roll on deodorant preferably Mitchum. That sorted my DS.

He can use what he likes on top of that. Lynx spray or other smelly spray.

He washes his face with a flannel and my expensive face wash which has helped the spots and oily face.

lovemycbf · 16/05/2024 19:16

Use a good old fashioned bar of soap like imperial leather and Mitchum deodorant
But I must say teenagers do pong it's the hormones unfortunately

RookieMa · 16/05/2024 19:23

Use a bar of soap

Do not use shower gel because it does not effectively remove deodorant

Do not use a moisturising bar of soap like Dove. Same issue

Use Mitchum cream deodorant or spray

That's it

This is a really good tip!

I concur. teenager boys just smell. I was invigilating A levels today with a small group of 9 and after 2.5 hours it was overpowering- and they were all clearly clean and well groomed boys.

Shower morning and night? Plus a proper deodorant. My 13 year old has fresh school shirt and trousers (and obviously knickers and vest and socks) daily and his blazer is also washed weekly. I don't think he smells, but I may have mum-smell-immunity.

UnitedOps · 16/05/2024 21:47

Roll on and spray deodorant- use together.
I had a sports top I use to wear at the gym. Ended up binning it as the smell of sweat just stuck to it. I drenched it in vinegar many times but the smell just wouldn’t go away!

Hoglet70 · 16/05/2024 21:51

DS19 smells after the gym. He is always in the shower and everything he wears is freshly laundered. I think it's a teenage boy thing.

FictionalCharacter · 16/05/2024 21:52

Scrub with real soap on the pits and feet, not shower gel.
Are you sure he's actually washing properly in the shower, not just standing under the water? DH and I used to go to a sports club and he said he was the only one who washed properly and washed his hair. The others used to just get wet under the shower for a few seconds then dry off.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 16/05/2024 22:19

Soap and nuud.

petermaddog · 16/05/2024 22:57

when possible keep polyesther fabrics away from them
synthetic fabrics are awful in general
i made my boys wear only cottons they still stink but not as bad and clothes cleans better
one on in my house wears synthetic

PurpleBugz · 16/05/2024 23:03

Bar of soap and a flannel. They need to scrub. Shower gels etc don't cut it.

Roll on antiperspirant.

Soak sports kits in diluted vinegar overnight before washing in bio powder without fabric conditioner and let dry outside. To get the smell out of clothes. Then wash in bio going forward and no fabric conditioner. Maybe do the shirts too give the armpits a sniff after have washed them it can really stick to shirts
