So DS13 has grown loads recently and is obviously in the teenage state of needing more sleep which I know and understand.

The problem is he is in bed at 9pm fast off sleeps till 7:30 when I walk him with lots of difficulty and then comes home from school at 3:30 and sleeps until dinner at 7 and is barely awake for dinner and shower. He isn’t wanting to play on the ps5 or his phone as he’s to tired and also isn’t watching YouTube or tv. He has no energy for football which he does 3 times a week he eats well I’ve been giving him vit c tablets as he has had constant colds since September. School have also called last week about his lack of energy which at a big high school must be noticeable.
I’ve tried to get a gp appointment as I just feel something is off but the receptionist told me he would not be getting one and it’s just his age and I should be pleased all he wants to do is sleep and not be out on the streets vaping. I’ve tried 3 times and keep getting told no do I leave it or keep trying? Is it just an age thing and a big growth spurt?

I had something like this when I was 17. Diagnosed with post-viral fatigue (possible glandular fever but GP said the test was inaccurate so not worth doing). It’s important he is reviewed in case there’s something underlying. If it’s similar to mine it still warrants an appointment because you can ask school for support and possibly extenuating circumstances when he does coursework/exams.

I would be contacting the practise manager with concerns over what the receptionist said.

Try every day for an appt, something is wrong.

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/05/2024 00:37

Call first thing in the morning for an appointment t and tell them that you have put in a complaint about their refusal to give your son an appointment.

Ring 111

They will find you an appointment

Riverlee · 17/05/2024 11:49

How have you got on today?

CheeriosOrFrosties · 17/05/2024 11:51

Hope you have managed to get an appointment OP.

So I called again after being on hold from 8 -9:07 I spoke to someone else and they also said no so I asked to speak to the practice manager, was told she was unavailable all day. So I said ok I’ve already sent her an email I’ll just call 111 to see if they can help. Amazingly she found me an appointment for Tuesday so fingers crossed. He’s been asleep most of the weekend so far and is just not right so I’ve said unless he perks up by tomorrow lunch I’ll take him to a&e which seems such a waste of their time as I think gp and bloods last week or the week before would have wasted less of everyone’s time.

I'd ring 111 now and say you are extremely worried as he is just sleeping. He needs blood tests really.

NewGreenDuck · 18/05/2024 20:11

This really is appalling! I hope there is nothing seriously wrong, but I shudder to think what would happen if there was. I would take him to A&E if he's the same tomorrow. Better safe than sorry.

RadRad · 18/05/2024 20:13

Since when the receptionists at GP practices can give medical advice, has the world gone completely mad?

Bigcoatlady · 18/05/2024 20:13

I understand you are very worried (I would be!) but I think if you have an appointment on Tues I wouldn't go to a&e before then, unless anything suddenly changes.

He may need bloods which the GP can arrange. That won't need a hospital trip. If he's already got a knackered immune system hanging around a&e just means he could pick up something else. And if he wants to sleep all the time waiting in a&e will be miserable.

I really hope the GP appointment on Tues is productive.

DamnNutella · 18/05/2024 20:14

As it’s been going on for a few months now and he’s getting worse I would be calling 111 but hopefully no need to visit a & e. Is he losing weight? Any pain in his legs?

You’ve been treated appallingly by your practice and this is just so worrying. Our country is falling to shit! 😞

TheSnakeCharmer · 18/05/2024 20:20

This is utterly shocking and you need to raise a serious complaint. He certainly needs blood tests. He may well have glandular fever. I had that as a teenager and fell to sleep in school everyday. I just couldn't keep awake.

Needanewname42 · 18/05/2024 20:21

You've got an appointment for Tuesday. I don't think it's worth calling 111 or going to A&E.

I'm assuming he's eating OK, and not generally unwell

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 18/05/2024 20:31

Move GP practices.

Some are just shockingly bad.

frozendaisy · 18/05/2024 21:17

13 year old boys growing or not don't sleep this much. There are obviously variations but it's been going on a while and anyone sleeping this much would be a concern.

If you want.the shortest wait early early morning for A&E if you can wake him.
