Fellow working, single parents.. is this doable?

I applied my for dream job, not thinking I would actually get it as I'm slightly inexperienced for the role and its usually highly competitive. I've only gone and been offered the job!!
But.. I'm a single parent (DS dad has him 30/40% of the time and can occasionally be a bit unreliable) and the role is 9-5 and approx 40 minutes to an hour commute. After school club finishes at 5.30 so I would need to rely on family after school. I think with breakfast club mornings would be workable. It would mean not getting home till quite late each day for DS after school.
Would this be doable long term? I'm slightly scared to make the jump as it would be a huge change for DS in wrap around care each day
Until now I've worked reduced hours for DS but this role has potential for huge progression in the next couple of years and also the possibility to move to a more local office I'm the future.

I'm not a single parent now, but when I was alone with Ds in Primary I used a childminder for before and after school care, much more reliable for us and she was available in the summer holidays all day care. She did loads of activities and the kids all had fun.

I'd look for a childminder who can have him til 6 if possible. Once in post you may find there's flexibility but initially it's best to be able to leave a few minutes after official end time

I hadn't really considered a childminder as he's school age but that's probably a good idea. Do you know if it was considerably more expensive than breakfast/after school club?

With a childminder you only pay for the hours you use. When my kids were younger the childminder she charged £4-5 per hour. It'll probably be cheaper on school days than breakfast club but you'd be looking at £40-50 a day in the holidays. Round here some childminders just work term time, others all year round but are very oversubscribed. Worth asking around.
