Travelling with a baby and medicine

Please talk to me as if I were a child because despite loads of googling I just can't seem to work this through in my head.......

Travelling next week, package deal holiday. Have a 10 month old so will need to take formula and baby food.

I don't think we need to take food for every meal for the baby as there should be something at the hotel I can mash up for him for some meals, but I'd like to take enough to be safe.

Can baby meals (pre bought / sealed - not going to faff with making myself for a holiday) go in hold luggage? Can formula? Was planning on putting 2 sealed bags of formula in my suitcase. I know I can buy milk and nappies airside but that will be a lot of stuff to take on the plane, no? There are pharmacy's near our hotel so I imagine I can buy what we run out of.

Also I take 3 types of prescription medication, around 6 tablets per day. Can these go in hold luggage?

I have travelled before, I promise. I just can't seem to work this out in my head!

TIA!!

Whatever you do, no NOT put your medication in your hold luggage! Anything important like that should always go in hand luggage in case your suitcase gets lost.

I'd also put an emergency amount of baby food and milk in your hand luggage for the same reason. I'm assuming baby food is exempt from the hand luggage liquid restrictions?

That's what I don't know.....

And this is why I need help 😂😂

Ok meds in hand luggage, noted. Will I need a doctors letter?

I would normally take the little pot that has 3 compartments for formula powder, to make feeds up. Can that go in hand luggage?

For all the baby items, see if your airport has a Boots after security, then order it all to be collected from there. Take a bag to put it all in and saves loads on hand luggage space!

Don't think you'll need doctors letter unless it's something like morphine.

Never ever put anything you’d be screwed without/couldn’t easily replace in checked baggage because can and do go missing.

So medication definitely in hand luggage. You usually wouldn’t need a doctor’s letter if it’s in original packaging but it can depend on what it is and where you’re going.

Formula- I would do a box in hand luggage and one in checked, if you’ll think you’ll need more than one. There are no restrictions on powder, it’s just space in your carry on.

Baby food pouches are liquid and whilst they’re exempt from the 100ml rule they’re only allowed in hand luggage in a reasonable quantity for the flight. So a day’s worth is fine, a week’s worth is not. They’ll be fine in checked though as you’ll cope without them if necessary.

Nappies I’d take 2 days worth in hand luggage in case of delays and/or unexpected blow outs! Chuck a few more in a checked bag then plan to grab another pack there if you’re tight on space. You just don’t want it to be the first priority on day 1 because you’ve run out!

Pack a full of clothes for everyone, 2 for baby, in hand luggage. Plus swimsuits if it’s a beach holiday. Then you’re covered from everything from baby vom to lost bag!

There's no restrictions on baby food/formula so you can take it on carry on with you. Also usually a baby bag is included as extra. Once it goes through security they'll test it. Mine is younger and I take a flask of boiling hot/cold water for the journey and formula in my change bag and it's always been fine

ncforuchelp · 15/05/2024 09:09

@paristotokyo so I can take a flask of hot and cold water on the flight to make up feeds? Do these need to be less than 100ml each?

You guys are awesome. Thanks for not judging my complete mental block at being able to travel with a baby!!

Do not put any medication in the hold on the way home either! Any delays at the airport and you’ll not have access. I always take my repeat prescription slip with me when travelling just in case.

You can take flasks for baby through security and they don’t have to be under 100ml.

At security just put the filled flasks, any ready made bottles or pre made milk and baby purées etc all on one tray out of bag as baby stuff. They can then scan separately if needed.

Medicine can go through in bags fine unless it’s a liquid over 100ml or needles. If so they take out and on tray. We take epipens through and I just put epipen bag on tray. We have doctors note but it’s never been asked for. You will need to declare anything or be careful if it’s drugs illegal in the country your going to (Europe in general is fine)

You can take unlimited baby formula etc in hold bags if needed

Thanks so much all!

If I were you, I'd buy pre made bottles of formula for your hand luggage, saves having to faff with hot and cold flasks.

paristotokyo · 15/05/2024 11:04

Yes, no limit on baby food or water and can be over 100ml. Also can usually take your pram up to the aircraft steps. Makes things much easier as they leave it by the steps when you disembark in most cases. But I have had to collect from the carousel depending on the airline. Enjoy your holiday :)
