Growing vegetables and fruits in pots?

I don’t have a garden, but a grassy area outside my window which I’m sure I’d be allowed to grow stuff in pots in, just obviously not allowed to start digging it up and planting things! Never really done anything like this except for helping my parents in our allotment many years ago, so what would be best for a beginner and able to thrive in pots?

We've just had our garden done and am keen to start planting, but am very very beginner so have joined Pot Gang, hoping they can teach me some new skills and I can grow some decent fruit, veg and herbs!

And OP there is a Gardening forum on mumsnet so take a look in there or move this thread there.

I’ve currently got blueberries and strawberries pending, they’re pretty straightforward. And lots of different herbs, also easy!

Tomatoes and courgettes are beginner friendly :)

Try herbs? Parsley, rosemary, thyme, mint and chives all grow well in pots. It's a bit late to grow a tomato plant this year but that is an option for next time.

I've grown lots in pots.
Cherry tomatoes, potatoes (very easy and not too late to put some seed potatoes in)
Herbs, garlic, beetroot... just give it a go :)

At the moment I have chillis, cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes, broad beans, french beans, radishes, spring onions, lettuce and rocket in pots.

They all work. Some have bush or dwarf varieties that work well.

I keep mine in a green house to stop them being used as a salad bar by the local deer, but they work outside too.

Or if you can only grow one thing, I have a fig tree in a huge pot, which gives about 30 fresh figs each year. That likes being against a wall.

Herbs and lettuces are good because they regrow once cut so get salad all summer.
Plus if you have people walking past they won't take much notice of them

Tomatoes are usually really easy and green beans

Courgettes are generally good but can be hit or miss

Potatoes you can grow in a special tall pot so you can get quite a little growing from the sides

I've grown tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and chillies all in large pots very successfully

What size pots would these need?

For potatoes we've used various things from buckets through to a black bin.
Put a small amount of soil on the bottom, then as it starts to grow, keep covering it. Each layer grows potatoes.

I have an old stepladder with a breadbin on the top that contains different herbs, and each rung has two small pots with herbs.

Strawberries are also good in pots. I've currently got salad (lettuce, mustard, spring onions, radish, small carrots, beetroot) in an old roof box for a car- the top is now a pond for wildlife.
