Has anyone turned their health around in middle age?

I had some high blood pressure readings and they have come down but now I’m thinking about how unhealthy I am. Probably a vicious circle as I’m sure it was entirety stress related.
I need to lose weight and eat better but I never seem to get around to it.
Also pre diabetic, slightly high cholesterol, lots of reasons to do something you’d think.

I’m approaching 50 and feel the fittest I’ve done since pre kids and can actually see muscle definition for the first time ever. I do four classes and a PT. I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts which talk about exercise (hiit and weights) having an impact on inflammatory conditions and leading to a long and active life, which are inspiring.

I would love to hear your podcast recommendations.

Some people need a proper fright before they act. You can wait for that if you want.

I'm more healthy nearly 50 than I ever have been. There just comes a point when your leaves you, your body starts to struggle on its own.

@gamerchick that’s what I was thinking today…. What am I doing? Waiting for the heart attack?

Yes, I topped the scales at a whopping 22 stone in my mid 30’s, high blood pressure, t2 diabetes, high cholesterol and aching hips/knees.

Now down to 14 stones, reversed diabetes, bp and cholesterol normal and no aching joints, but it’s taken 20 Years of exercise, nothing special, just walking and cycling. Never felt fitter!

you’re starting point is so similar to where I am - including the whole string of health issues that would definitely be improved if I was not overweight. It feels so out of reach. You look fantastic.

You can do it. It will change your life so much for the better. I was heading for an early grave, honestly. If you possibly can, get started before menopause (when your periods have stopped for a year I believe). I managed to get in shape and in good health before menopause hit me at 53.

This book is what made me realise what I needed to do - I highly recommend it to you - it changed my whole attitude of what I believed was possible at my age and in the poor condition I was in. I got started the day after I read it and never looked back.

Yes I have, at 43. Since last Oct, I'm eating whole foods, cut down on processed junk, reduced sugar and now love the gym.

8yrs ago I quit smoking, 3.5yrs ago I quit vaping. I've been a couch potato my adult life usually around 13st, size 16-18. In lockdown I put on 2st and was a size 20-22. My knees were struggling, my snoring was bad, I got out of breath easily. Since making those changes 7m ago, I'm back down to where I was and still have 2-3 stone left to go, I'd love to be a size 10-12.

I got cancer at 48, had been healthy before, normal BMI and exercised but treatment was like being run over by a bus and I also gained 14kgs taking me to overweight category for first time in my life. Also gave me oestopenia, hair loss, breast loss, no hrt possible.

I went on a 1200 calorie diet and also do 5 hours exercise a week and have lost 12kgs since October and rest should be off by June. Almost no menopause symptoms and swim about 3 miles a week, go round gardens and do gardening. Hair is back to a reasonable length, hopefully NHS will give me diep to put breast back this year, waiting since Dec 21. It is well worth keeping going and strongly recommend exercise. I go to a private pool with jacuzzi steam room and sauna and always get lane to yourself, sometimes whole pool and take DH and he is so much fitter too.

Yes. At 51 I had very severe asthma, high blood pressure, painful joints, breathless, couldn't run, poor sleep. weight 220lb.

In 6 months I got down to 160lb and started to lift weights in my kitchen. I finally got down to 140lb 9 months after starting and could lift very heavy weights, run, slept well, asthma gone (incredible after all these years), no joint pain.
I cut out processed foods, upped protein intake and kept calories to 1400 a day. I used Myfitnesspal (the free version) and made loads of friends on there who were fantastic. When I posted my before and after pics I had people contact me out of the blue and ask me to mentor them. Wonderful experience. No gym for me - just weights in my kitchen.

Your body is capable of changing. You just have to show it what you want it to do, and it will mend.

Wow. That's incredible- well done!
