Possible glandular fever - any tips

The doctor said today they think I may have glandular fever and need to rest for a few days - any other tips on what I can do to prevent it?

Hmmm it may take more than a few days of rest and if you have it, you can't do anything about it. Anyway, take it from me, if you have got it the chances are you'll be off your feet for a while so indulge yourself, lots of rest and relaxation. Do not let anyone tell you when to go back to work! Don't drink alcohol (much), don't do contact sports and er.. just look after yourself and get well soon xx

Thank you, how long did it take you to feel better? Do you mind me asking what were your symptoms? Did they diagnose you by a blood test?

You can't prevent it if you have it. Blood test is needed to diagnose. If you've got it expect to be out of action for a while. I was poorly for over 12 weeks when I had it.

I was over the worst in a week, no worse than a flu, but got sort of hot flashes for a few months after where I'd feel wiped out and a bit feverish again for the odd hour here or there as it worked its way out of my system.

Should the doctor offer a blood test to confirm? Did your symptoms come and go?

Rest up, eat healthy. No gym, running etc. honestly it's just time to recover you need. My son came home from university with it. GP said just rest. He did nothing but sleep for three weeks one Christmas.

I thought it was something younger people caught. Did your son have a blood test? The symptoms seem to start of similar to tonsilitis / strep, is it when it doesn’t start to clear up it could be glandular fever? Do most people recover from it ok in time?

Most think it is a young persons disease and the doctor was very rude when I was diagnosed with it as I'm not a teenager. Rest and fluids. I think you're sounding like you are unnecessarily panicking. One gets over it fine.

Do you mind asking what your symptoms were and if the doctors did a blood test to diagnose?

My daughter's boyfriend seems to get glandular fever every few months and he did have a blood test to confirm the diagnosis.

The key thing is the reason to avoid contact sports etc. Glandular fever leads to an enlarged spleen, which means it is much easier to damage.
My daughter was diagnosed after a differential diagnosis (basically it wasn't tonsillitis), it took her 3 months to be able to do much, and probably at least a year to get better.
