The boss of Tesco has seen his pay package more than double to £10m following a bumper share award. Ken Murphy, who took over as chief executive of the UK's largest supermarket group in October 2020, was paid £4.7m in salary and bonuses in the year to February

Seriously?! Most people struggling with massive hikes in the cost of living and this multi millionaire mire than doubles his income.

I know. It's bloody disgusting

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2024 18:47

It is a kick in the teeth to those who actually do the work and deal with horrendous customers and working conditions:(

BusyMintCrab · 14/05/2024 18:49

Well yea it’s a lot of money but who would actually want to be in charge of a company with a revenue of £60 billion?! Not me that’s for sure.

For £10m I’ll do it for a year or two…

BuckFadger · 14/05/2024 18:51

I cannot get myself worked up about this. It's private sector business and they employ over 300,000 people in the United Kingdom. If you have issue with the top bosses salary then don't shop at Tesco.

We should be far more concerned about how public sector money is spent.

Would you be able to though? do you have any idea of what's involved?

Cheepcheepcheep · 14/05/2024 18:58

I wish I could give a zinger about how I’m a CEO somewhere 😂

I’m a business development lead at a City firm so I could give it a go I reckon, but tbh I’ve seen plenty of CEOs paid top money for a couple of years of poor returns so I reckon I could stay the course long enough to bank the cash!

Cheepcheepcheep · 14/05/2024 18:59

I think the wider point though is that surely no one should be making that kind of money. I completely understand the way the market works (and I fully accept that my role in the capitalist machine doesn’t help) but surely the income differentials should be quite so pronounced.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 14/05/2024 19:01

I'm in Canada and a lot of people (including me) are boycotting a certain chain of supermarkets this month for similar reasons - they are making record profits and people are struggling to feed their kids.

There's not much i can do about the COL crisis - but i can certainly not give them my usual $1000 this month fuckers

I think we should be concerned about profiteering.

The rich getting disgustingly richer whilst everyone else struggles.

You do know we all live in the same society right?

Do you genuinely think that they set their prices so they have enough profit to pay the Chief Exec that salary? And if they paid him less then they could/would sell food cheaper?

That’s not how business, economics or competition work.

MrsJackThornton · 14/05/2024 19:10

I feel like there should be a formula which dictates the most the highest paid member of staff can get paid compared to the lowest paid member of staff

e.g. 5x the salary of the lowest member of staffs full time salary

Because its not just the profits when we are in a cost of living crisis. Its also that he's getting paid millions whilst his staff earn so little that many of them are being propped up by the tax payer through benefits

So Tesco get their big profits and the country gets a big benefit bill for people working full time, in many cases, who should be paid sufficient to have a decent standard of living but arent

Unopenedpackofmenssocks · 14/05/2024 19:11

And for every Ken Murphy whose salary is public there are ten bankers and hedge fund managers who take home even more, but whose salaries aren’t so well known. It’s just how the world works, some jobs are very well paid. Focus your rage on the bits of society that stop people getting equal access to education and the job opportunities to get these jobs, not on the existence of the jobs themselves.

No.
Tesco posted 2.3billion in profit last year. His salary is a reflection of that.
Meanwhile families are being made homeless & foodbank use is rising.

Those of who who don't find this obscene are probably the reason we've had these tory wankers running the country for so long.

So fucking selfish.

It makes me so angry when I see the donation baskets in Tesco for the local food banks. They could fund every single food bank for years but instead they do this fake community service bullshit

This is so true.

They could cut their prices, pay their staff more, improve the facilities in the shops, invest something in the local communities or perhaps even stop my local store smelling like sewage. I can't go in their as it stinks so badly...the poor staff.

I read on mumsnet that these big corporations do receive government/ tax payers money and it was written by someone who knows what they were talking about ( it was on an old thread ages ago probably about a similar topic)
A lot of the employees probably have to receive top ups from benefits in order to survive too as many of the jobs are only minimum wage/ part time.
Yet one person can earn these kinds of salaries.
It does feel wrong even if ' it is what it is'.

Brexit and an unshackled conservative government...what could possibly go wrong for the poor and low earners in society.
