How long did it take you to lose weight with slimming world?

Hi, I’m rejoining my local sw group tonight. I haven’t been in over a year the last time I went I did really well and lost 3.5 stone but this was back in 2022 after I had my baby. Since then I’ve gained it all back and more and I really need to do something about my weight, I hadn’t realised how heavy I am looking until recently.
anyway, my question is how long did it take you to lose the weight you wanted? I need some motivation so I can get started 😂

How long did it take last time?
And why do you think it’s the right solution when it didn’t work long term last time?

I can’t remember how long it took. It did work but I lost motivation and I’m ready to try it again. You don’t have any experience with it then, no?

I do. Like you, I lost weight - a lot in the first week then about 1-2 pounds a week. Then I stopped and put it all back on. Because diets don’t work long term. 95%of people regain all and more.
The only way is to completely change your relationship with food and exercise.

I would rather rejoin today and give it another go than do nothing at all. It was successful for me but I didn’t keep it up. I don’t really see it as a diet as it’s not really restrictive

@cardibach honestly the best thing to do is buy some dumbbells and a kettle bell. Down load a calorie counter app and save some you tube vids on 10-15 weight work outs.

start counting your calories and doing one ten min vid a day - you can do it whilst watching tv then build up to longer vids when you can take it. I don’t do any cardio - just weights and it fell off quickly.

The problem with those types of clubs is they encourage large plates of food - so when you come off the diet your still eating that way.

When you calorie count you become really mindful of what you’re putting in your mouth to eat and when you see the difference in your body of the weights that encourages you - not being fat shamed by someone at a club weighing you 🙈

I’m not having a problem, thanks. I’ve changed my lifestyle and the weight is coming off, but more than that I’m healthier, fitter and happier. It’s what I’m trying to suggest to the OP

You lost weight because you had a calorie deficit, not because you bought a kettlebell.

Your way isn't any better. Once you've lost weight you still need to count calories but at a maintenance level. SW does exactly the same thing for members at target.

Where did I say do nothing? I said do something other than SW. Something that might actually work…

No you don’t.
How many naturally/consistently thin people count calories? They have a good relationship with food on the whole, don’t comfort eat and don’t overeat routinely(though they might at a special event/on holiday). Restricting yourself via laborious counting for the rest of your life is unrealistic and unsustainable for most (which is why most people who diet regain all the weight).

Groovee · 14/05/2024 17:26

I lost 4.5 stone in 14 months. Gained it back after having covid in 2022 and becoming ill again. I just found it not sustainable.

You don’t need to suggest anything to me. I was just looking to see how long it took others who are sw members

I was trying to help by pointing out there are better ways to achieve what you want. I now see you aren’t interested, so I’ll bow out.

Jeez don’t be arsey with me. I never claimed you said that. I was just stating I would rather try sw again and give it a go rather than do nothing about my weight at all.
I was also looking for answers from people who had success with it and just see how others have done

I joined SW , bought a 12 week count down
My 12th weigh in is this week and if I manage to lose 1lb I will get my 2 stone award
I feel amazing
Dropped 2 dress sizes , sleeping better , less aches , B/P has come down

Go for it and don't listen to anyone who tells you otherwise

Yeah they’ve always had a good relationship with food - so they don’t need to.

Unfortunately some of us have not.

When you calorie count you learn and train your brain to be mindful of what you’re eating - taking accountability - it’s not restrictive if you plan ahead and get the hang of it. And you don’t have to do it for the rest of your life 🙄🙄 because you are more aware of what your eating so it becomes a habit.

You can still have your plates of spaghetti Bol!

You’ve continued to eat those big plates of food they tell you your allowed, still overeating and regained the weight back and more.

To lose weight is pretty simple - Less calories and how do you know your eating less calories when those groups tell you to not watch them? Wonder why they do that 🤔

I lost 3 stone and kept it off because im
now used to not over eating and exercising.

Tbh a group that tells you advocados are syns but says pasta mug shots are better is way off healthy.

DontBiteTheCat · 14/05/2024 18:02

You have to do what’s right for you OP, but ultimately SW is a business, it makes money from people rejoining.

I started SW again at least 5 times. I’m very cynical of it as a whole now, it didn’t teach me portion control and it didn’t teach me how to eat for health, and ultimately sustaining my loss. Calorie counting worked for me, alongside learning about nutrition. Fat free and sugar free stuff is laced with chemicals usually, but I understand if you want to give it a go again and wish you luck.

Actually doing weights burn off lots of cals ( way more than cardio) and they keep burning way after you stop because the muscle is repairing.

So weight plus calorie counting works.

Yes calorie counting in its own works but it’s not as fast and you dont get toned or stronger.

Also when you exercise it spurs you on not to pig out at night and undo the work you have just done

Thanks x

Wow well done you! 👏 I loved how good I felt when I followed the plan. You’ve done really well

Hi OP. I lost 3.5 stone with SW between January and mid July last year.
I loved it and found the food plan easy to follow and the weekly group meeting kept me on track and motivated me.

I hear what other posters are saying about changing your relationship with food, eating and exercise and SW did that for me. I've maintained the balanced, healthy way of life and kept the weight off for 10 months now. I still go to group most weeks partly to keep me on track and partly because I've made friends there so it's fun. Keeping going is free when you're at target so it's no expense or hardship.

Good luck with it.

MissCalamity · 14/05/2024 19:57

I joined SW last April and did it for 18 weeks ( 12 & a 6 week countdown)

I lost 1 stone and 10.5 lbs, I did have a week's all inclusive holiday right at the end 🙈
Since then I've lost another stone, I'm not following the SW "plan" anymore, just making sure I eat better things and don't snack as much. I also feel like I enjoy exercising more as my body knees are not under as much pressure 🤣

I'm glad I did it as it really kick started my weight loss, I know it doesn't work for everyone but it did for me!

Good luck with it!

@cardibach OP wanted info about SW. Not another Sw bashing thread.

OP it's a great way to NOT have to stress about every bit of food. It works better 1st time IMO, but it will still work nice and steady. They say 1lb per week. Any more is a bonus! 😊

cardibach · 14/05/2024 22:08

@StMarieforme i didn’t bash SW. I pointed out that it hadn’t worked before and that diets don’t work for around 95% of people (assuming that by ‘work’ we mean people lose the weight and keep it off). SW is no better or worse than any other in that respect. But it’s clear most people don’t really care about long term, just quick losses right now.

I am really glad I went this evening, I need to make changes and I know SW will really help 😊
