TV Licence

How many people will own up to not having a Television Licence on MN?
with the absolute crap the BBC bombard us with over the last multiple years, I feel we should all boycott paying for it.
I purchased a license at 11-55 pm on the last day of the month of April, thinking it would start on the first day of the next month, Oh no, it was back dated to the first of April, what a con. for the sake of 5 minutes I was well & truly stuffed.

I have one as I watch what it covers but if I didn’t, I wouldn’t. I also pay top whack for the streaming platforms to avoid adverts so compared with some of them the licence seems good value

Startingagainandagain · 14/05/2024 18:44

I don't have a licence but I genuinely don't watch any live TV or BBC online.

I simply filled the online form that allows you to declare you don't need a licence.

I think the concept of TV licensing is outdated and I decided I was not willing to pay for the BBC after it became a Tory mouthpiece and lost its independence.

I am not contributing to the salaries of Laura Kuenssberg or Fiona Bruce.

Don't miss it at all...

CranfordScones · 14/05/2024 18:47

"Guilty" - don't have a tv (or watch on any other device). No subscriptions either (I know they don't require a licence).

TV isn't a part of my life - much as to the disbelief of many people.

I had one when the kids were little as I didn't like the idea of telling them not to answer the door in case it was tv licensing people. One day, I did get a knock but luckily I had paid and could prove it.

Now, on my own, I don't watch live TV and just ignore the monthly threatening letters.

Who is sending monthly threatening letters? Did you tell them you weren’t renewing it? annoyingly they put the onus on us to say we don’t want their crappy licence to watch 50 year old programmes anymore.

You should complain about their harassment!

I don’t trust or agree with their agenda and don’t want to pay for their ridiculously overpaid presenters. I’m sick of offensive drag and queer propaganda throughout their programming (not the lily savage type drag, even he said what’s shown now is so far removed from it).

Don’t miss watching live TV and I encourage my friends and family to ditch the licence fee.

Even if they made one decent programme I wanted to see, I still wouldn’t give a cent of my money to fund their utter shite.

Yours, Mrs Trellis, N.Wales etc

Laura Kuenssberg and Fiona Bruce are sooooo left wing it makes my teeth hurt (eye roll).
I'm quite happy to pay my licence fee..Detectorists/Gavin and Stacey/ Happy Valley/60 years of Doctor Who just sitting there.
If you don't want it then don't have it. Most of Netflix and Prime are shite...we have both. And it seems to me every time I want to want something on Prime they want extra money.

You can’t actually mean that about LK and FB?
Have I missed a joke?

cardibach · 14/05/2024 18:57

Cherryon · 14/05/2024 17:18

Haven’t had one since 2007. We dont watch live TV or BBC iplayer.
It’s better for the DC too to not have been bombarded with CBeebies crap growing up

Do you listen to any BBC radio?

Kalevala · 14/05/2024 18:58

cardibach · 14/05/2024 18:57

Doesn't require a licence.

JulianFawcettMP · 14/05/2024 18:59

I think it's telling that on this relatively short thread the BBC is accused of being a Tory mouthpiece and of producing left wing propaganda. Maybe they aren't doing such a bad job of balance after all .

LieutOliviaBenson · 14/05/2024 19:13

Nope, haven't had one for around 10 years. No TV aerial so no capacity to watch live TV. Pay for Netflix and Prime, get Disney with clubcard vouchers and there's tons of stuff to watch on ITVX and All4.

LieutOliviaBenson · 14/05/2024 19:15

cardibach · 14/05/2024 18:57

BBC radio doesn't need a TV Licence. The only BBC radio station worth listening to was Radio 2 and I stopped listening when Ken Bruce left, he was the only good thing on there.

MrsJackThornton · 14/05/2024 19:17

I don't have one, I don't watch anything that needs one

TuesdayWhistler · 14/05/2024 19:18

The BBC can piss off. I haven't bought a licence for years.

I don't consume their output and I would never ever knowingly support them or their 'stars'

Too many people get bullied and threatened to pay a fee that goes to fund multimillionaires for doing very little actual work of value.
If I had the authority, I'd close the BBC, sack the whole fucking lot of the shit heaps, sell the Intellectual properties to the highest bidders and let them gut them.

Stickycurrantbun · 14/05/2024 19:36

I'd love to stop paying for it. Only watch Netflix/Disney+ and no aerial for watching regular TV but... because I've watched a couple of programmes live (King's Coronation, Women's Euro final) on iPlayer I feel compelled to keep paying it. I wonder how much those saying they NEVER watch anything live or on catch up on iPlayer are being completely truthful?

I don't watch the television at all. I have one because we used to have Netflix. If you watched programmes in the past then you can stop paying, you would only be required to restart if you intended to watch something on iPlayer again, you could just wait until you need it if it could be months in-between.

Stickycurrantbun · 14/05/2024 19:57

I thought it's an annual licence so you have to pay for a year (split up into monthly payments) so can't just turn it on and off if there's something once in a while you want to watch

Devilsmommy · 14/05/2024 19:59

I don't have one because I genuinely don't watch live TV. Don't even have an aerial socket to attach TV to😂

When I cancelled mine when I realised I didn't need it I was refunded the months I had paid for but not yet used.

Kalevala · 14/05/2024 20:04

If you had to pay for a year they'd surely have kept taking the money until I had paid for a year, instead of stopping it immediately and refunding me?

Iheartmysmart · 14/05/2024 20:04

I don’t have a tv licence. I watch Netflix, Prime and Disney + but that’s it. If the BBC ever bought in a subscription system where you could opt in and out as and when they have something interesting on then I’d consider it.

Kimmeridge · 14/05/2024 20:04

I don't have one. Don't see why I should pay BBC a monthly fee when I dont watch anything on their channels.

I'll stick to catch up channels, Disney+ and Prime

my point was more about the morality than the legal position.

Stickycurrantbun · 14/05/2024 20:06

That's interesting Kalevala. Maybe I'll do that!

To those saying you don't have an aerial, don't forget there's the option to watch live programmes on streaming channels online (All4, ITVX, etc) which still requires a licence. Not saying I agree with it, just that's the rules.

As long as your catch up doesn’t include iPlayer, you’re fine.

BBC radio is free. I don't have to buy a different product because I used a free product from the same business.

How do you think the ‘free’ product is paid for though? Legally you are right. Morally, I’d struggle.
