Blow drying daughter's hair - what age?

If you have children with really long hair when did they learn to blow dry it themselves?

DD 12 has waist length hair, due to various sports etc she washes it about 5 times a week.

I like doing her hair, it's a bit of a chore but it's beautiful.. but when will she or should she do her own?

It can't air dry as gets too cold and itchy.
She's getting better at brushing and putting it up herself.

I have no clue as grew up with a somewhat neglectful mum.

They should be managing their own hygiene needs by secondary school including doing their hair.
I hope she's choosing to have hair like this and isn't being pressured into it.

My niece has knee length hair she never blow drys its wash and left to dry naturally.
Its so thick and long in winter she wraps it around her neck for a scarf.
Has do others in our family.
She had it cut once when she dye it hated it shaved it off and never cut it or dyed it again.
Very healthy hair moto in our family for good hair is no heat no dye once a month olive oil leave in all day wash out next day.

My 10 year old blow dries her own hair but it’s shoulder length. I have 3 children so don’t have time to blow dry everyone’s.

She definitely old enough to do it herself and once she’s the one doing it 5x a week she might decide to have it cut!

my daughter will be 11 next month. she has thick waist length hair. i don’t see her doing it herself anytime soon but i also don’t mind doing it.

Our son is eight and blow dries his own hair, are secondary school kids really still have their hair dried by someone else?

Flaoty · 15/05/2024 19:15

The weight of the hairdryer probably makes a difference. I got a lighter one and DD started drying her own hair at 14.

I know, it’s blowing my mind a bit too!

DD is 11 and I like blow drying her hair but she also can and does do it herself. Hers is bum length, I offer on a weekend because I like doing it but she expects to do it herself.

She often rough dries it and then plaits it to save herself some time, could your dd do that?

GotMarriedInCornwall · 15/05/2024 20:29

I’m 41 and still can’t blow dry my own hair beyond just wafting a hair dryer at it and I’m fairly sure a 12 year old could manage that.

PeterJohnson · 15/05/2024 20:40

I'm a bit shocked! I'm not sure DD (12) with reasonably long mid-back length hair knows we have a hairdryer! She puts it up in a towel after she's washed it, brushes and usually whines at me to plait it before bed. Also sporty and washes it 5-6 times a week. Do people really blow-dry their hair every time they wash it, isn't that really bad for the hair? Why is it neglectful not to use a hairdryer?

DrJonesIpresume · 15/05/2024 20:40

The thing to do is get it half-dry and then say "Do you want to have a go for a bit while I make a coffee?".

Edited

Mine hates going to bed with wet/damp hair so she blow dries it.

celticprincess · 15/05/2024 20:55

Guess it depends what you or she wants from the blow dry. My 11 year old blow dries her fair bit then I have to finish it off and straighten it - she has very wavy/curly hair and hasn’t figured out how to get a nice curly style so prefers it straightened. I have also bought a ghd straightening brush which she can use herself. My 14 year old won’t have a hairdryer near her hair. She leaves it to dry.

Peonies12 · 15/05/2024 21:09

If she wants long hair she needs to learn to dry it on her own. She’s plenty old enough

EasilyDeterred · 15/05/2024 22:55

Mine is 18 with mid back length hair and has only started using a hairdryer in the last year or so, she's still happy to let it air dry most of the time, even through the years and years of swimming 5x a week. She knew we had one but wasn't bothered, possibly because no one else in our house uses one much (including me) so that's normal in our house. She's been plaiting and putting it up herself since late primary age though.

SkaneTos · 15/05/2024 23:11

If a 12 year old wants to have waist lenght hair, then she needs to take care of it herself, or at least be able to take care of it herself. I would think a 12 year old would want to manage her own hair?

I had long hair when I was a child and teenager. My mother was very loving and caring when I grew up. I still took care of my own hair, from age 8.

OP, what would happen if you just handed your daughter the hair dryer?

Grumpyoldblonde · 15/05/2024 23:17

Mine got her own hairdryer at about 9 and could dry her own hair but she's nearly 20 now and sometimes asks me to dry it, it's a lovely bonding moment tbh.

Every morning I would wake up and me and my mum did my hair together, right into secondary school. She taught me to blow dry it and style it so sometimes I would do it and she would help, or sometimes she’d do it all for me. Even when I was 16 going to parties she would blow dry and curl it for me. My mum and I didn’t get much time together because of siblings and school and work plus all the clubs, but it was time to chat every morning.
I’m 24 now and she still does it for me when I stay at hers. When I get married one day I imagine us sitting and chatting in front of the mirror while she does my hair.
it might be time consuming and I’m sure she didn’t always want to do it, but it was time I got with my mum every day.
if you have the time and you love your daughters hair, I would encourage you to spend that time with her. Sometimes I wish I could sit and have my hair brushed by my mum still!

RookieMa · 16/05/2024 00:49

I had long hair as a child and just tipped my head upside down to dry it and give it body

Mayhemmumma · 17/05/2024 10:49

@cherryassam and @123456789jx thank you, your stories made me well up.

Love how ragey a simple question can be on here - yes she's 12, yes in year 7. I just wanted a general consensus on when people stop drying their kids hair if they do use a hairdryer.

She's been giving it a go herself and it's fine - I was more worried that maybe I should still be doing it, she's more than capable. I'll still plait it sometimes (just to really horrify some of you)

@Mayhemmumma
Sorry if my response to you was harsh.
I do agree with you, and many of the previous posters, that you helping your daughter with her hair is a lovely bonding moment, and that is really worth something!
But it's also a useful skill, to be able to fix your own hair, so it's great that she is able to.
You sound like a lovely mother!
