Parents of children starting in Reception - reading?

My daughter turns 4 end of this month and she's not reading yet. She recognises most if her letters and most definitely her name, but isn't blending to form words yet, not even cvc words.such as d-o-g dog.
Not sure if I need to be concerned?
I can't remember back to what my other two were like before they started Reception as they're now 14 and almost 17.

My child is in reception now and could recognise most letters but not blend at all before she started. She is now on phase 5 phonics and I'm quite amazed how quickly she learnt. Don't worry.

This is completely fine. Our children only started blending once in Reception. They learned letters and their name in preschool. They are now Y1 and Y4 and both read beyond expected level (9 year old has reading age of 12).

My son started in reception in September. He couldn't read at all aside from being able to recognise the alphabet, but no phonics or anything. He is flying with his reading.

I wouldn't worry of course if they have some knowledge it will help but is certainly not required.

It's more practical things like doing buttons, wiping bum, using a knife and fork that they want.

Relax, she’s fine and in a good place to start reception. Focus on sharing books together and developing her love of stories and reading - this will serve her much better in the long run than being able to read before reception.

DD could read and write at a year 3 ISH level when she started school (turns out she is autistic and was obsessed with letters and numbers) I didn't realise it was strange at the time. She was bored ridged in primary school.

Ds starts school in September he isn't bothered by reading he recognises the odd word and knows his letters. Hoping he has a much more enjoyable start to school as there will be things he can learn.

They are all different. Don't worry.

I teach this age range.
I’d reckon maybe 90% of the kids start with no reading at all. No sounds, barely even recognise their own name a lot of them.
Your DD will be fine.

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 12/05/2024 23:02

No, don’t be concerned they learn a new ‘sound’ every day in reception. To help prepare her for reception, I’d practise some sound recognition with her, I can see something that starts with the sound… “sssss….” Or sound talking some words for her to find “put on your c-oa-t” etc

Thanks all, I just wish I could remember my boys at this age! I do remember my eldest being August-born massively struggled, especially emotionally, in his first year of school, but he's predicted 4 A*s at A-Level so clearly he did OK on the end ❤️
Daughter is so independent it's untrue! 😄

Mine is autumn-born and has just in the last week started sounding out three letter words. She’s trying to sound out longer words but mixing up letters and sounds a lot eg she will try to spell her friend 'izzie’ and sound out i, z, e. I try not to say much in case I inadvertently get the phonics system wrong and cause confusion!
