Whats up with my babies face :(

My son just randomly came out in this red, slightly weeping red patch. I took a photo and took it to the pharmacy so they agreed with me it could be impetigo and prescribed an antibiotic ointment.
My husband has used various things on the skin.. we've done the 4/day application of the cream but we also initially used sudocreme before impetigo was floated around (my mum said it to me so I then said it to pharmacist but now I'm wondering if I planted the seed in the pharmacists head and it could actually be something else?). And that did seem to help it. Then today he put some germolene on it as we are not convinced it is impetigo at all. It hasn't spread, none of us have caught it especially older bro who they smoosh their faces together regularly!

It's not weeping now but looks so red. But I don't know what it is and now I'm panicking it's a cold sore (Google onset of cold sores in babies and some of the pictures are similar). We have just been away with DHs parents and his mum does suffer from cold sores but it didn't look like she had one at the time.

If you zoom in on first pic you can see the weeping bit. But that's as much as it got...
Him wearing blue was yesterday and green is tonight

Has he been licking that part of his face?
My daughter had a habit of doing that for a while had whole sore patch around her mouth.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/05/2024 21:30

He is fairly slobbery but I don't think it's dribble rash due to the weeping part of it?

Meant to say we are only on day 2 of the antibiotic cream..

Keep going with the cream for now - but it might be one for the GP to look at
I think we got given a stronger version of E45 cream that's prescription only.
Hopefully it's not bothering him to much 🙂

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/05/2024 21:41

Ok. I am just anxious that it's a cold sore. I really would want him to have the virus especially at 2yr old.

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy I think unfortunately once you've got the cold sore virus you're stuck with it for life 🙁

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/05/2024 21:45

Yes that's why I am anxious about it! I really don't want a lifetime of cold sores for him :(

My son had something that looked very similar at similar age. He was prescribed Trimovate cream, it worked great and really quickly. To me ,it doesn’t look like cold sore. Good luck 🤞

FernwoodRydal · 12/05/2024 21:49

If it helps I don't think it looks like a coldsore, the first pic maybe but the second pic looks more dry and red and not crusty enough. If it was a cold sore I think it would hurt significantly as well so probably he'd be showing signs of that.

I probably would go to the GP with it but keep up with the cream in the meantime - with us it took 2-3 days for impetigo to start getting better.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/05/2024 21:52

I know it definitely isn't what I think a cold sore to look like either but when I googled it, a photo very similar to what my son has popped up.
But he doesn't seem bothered by it really. Only at bedtime he started to touch it but thankfully fell asleep quickly so he won't be bothering it now.

I'll ring the gp in the morning then and get a second opinion

Could it be a bug bite?? I don't think it looks like impetigo or a cold sore tbh x

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/05/2024 22:00

It could be because we had been out at the paddling pool 2 days ago and it appeared that evening we think! So we wondered about the sun(but why would it only be on that one spot?), a big bite, a reaction to suncream.

Did the pharmacist suggest strawberry rash? Not always caused by strawberries! Very common in young children a mild contact rash that can be triggered by contact with food, melon and tomatoes used to trigger my kidS. Plants in the garden can do it too. Antihistamine syrup can help bring it down and they grow out of it.

AmyandPhilipfan · 12/05/2024 22:16

Has the weather quite suddenly changed where you are from cold and wet to dry and hot? My 15 year old always used to get a cracked, sore area at one or both sides of his mouth whenever the weather changed. It lasted a few days and then cleared up. We used to put Sudocrem or moisturiser on it. Now he's 15 I can't remember the last time it happened so I think he's grown out of it happening.

Autumcolors · 12/05/2024 22:18

Could it be impetigo?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 12/05/2024 22:22

The weather has changed! We are NE Scotland and it went from freezing to scorchio hence the paddling pool!

@Autumcolors yes that's what the pharmacist said. Although I had asked her based on me asking my mum if that's what it looked like.

My husband is reading up on it all and is convinced it's impetigo. Just the fact that we got cream from pharmacy super early on has maybe helped it not spread?

RolaColaLola · 12/05/2024 22:31

You said the cream has helped, so continue to use it. Book an appointment with the GP if it doesn’t clear up or starts getting worse.

Autumcolors · 12/05/2024 22:18

Could it be impetigo?

I think it's this

Noseybookworm · 13/05/2024 00:42

Looks like impetigo 🙁 needs treating ASAP as it's highly contagious and he's obviously too little to be able to stop him touching and spreading it! Antibiotics either orally or in a cream usually.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 13/05/2024 19:23

Yup we got the antibiotics on day one so it's not spread at all thankfully
