Suggest a hobby using a strength in 3D design and construction?

My 9yo Dd has recently been confirmed as being dyslexic. Its likely that she will struggle with some school work as she gets older. I want to support her with things she's good at, to help her be happy and confident. And resilient. Her dyslexia assessment picked up a very high ability at non-verbal reasoning, particularly 3D design and construction. I have no idea what to do with this though! Any ideas for hobbies that could play to this strength? She doesn't enjoy things like Lego, which would have been an obvious one.

Woodwork?

Revelatio · 12/05/2024 20:32

Knitting or crochet? Making your own patterns requires these skills.

At this age I would just encourage this side of her but still keep at everything else too. It's far too restrictive at this age to define her by one assessment taken on one day. Look for some Lego groups perhaps?

There are lots of modelling/kits that you can buy. 3D can mean anything really. Good spatial is needed in sports, dance etc.

Digital 3d modelling would be a great start. Tinkercad is a free browser based program aimed at kids. It also offers coding, circuits planning as well as 3d modelling. Then as she gets a little older, maybe a small 3d printer that she can bring her ideas to life.

I am an avid 3d modeller and use 3d printers as a hobby and would be happy to offer more advice if you need it.

There are so many hobbies that play to those strengths. I would encourage her to try lots of different things if you can. Pottery, photography, mosaic making, digital art, model railway layout making….

My first thought was to suggest Lego.....🙁
I used to make houses and furniture out of paper - you can get sets. Usborne do books that you cut out the parts and stick together and then she could start designing her own.

Paper quilling ( I think that’s what you call it)

Lego

Give her £50 and let her loose in Hobbycraft. 😂

Seriously though, I wouldn't try to steer her in any particular direction, just let her choose for herself.

I don't understand what this might be 😂

@Curlewwoohoo I assume the 3D pen is one of these.

Minecraft is digital 3D design
Building model airplanes, etc
3D puzzles- Eiffel Tower, Big Ben usually they are of landmarks
Technic sets
Pottery- wheel or hand ceramics, sculpting
Sewing stuffed toys
Sewing clothes/fashion

Unsolicited advice- my DD is severely dyslexic and one accomodation was reducing reading and written work. Teachers had to give her a copy of their notes so she could just listen in class. She was allowed to watch a film or listen to audio book instead of read a book for book reports. Reports she either gets extra time to do it, or can write fewer words. She has a scribe for exams- especially maths because the numbers and symbols need to be read out to her and then she dictates her work…otherwise she will think 15 but write 21 as an answer,

I was never a massive Lego person as a child but I really enjoyed K-nex. I found it a lot easier to construct e.g. a bridge or a Ferris wheel etc than with the limited Lego bricks I had. I had some little motors etc and it was great fun.

Minecraft
