Which items would you rent out?

Thinking of a little side hustle.
If you could rent out rather than buy. Which items do you think you would be interested in?
What would you expect to pay.
Thanks.

Anyone, or not interested?

There’s already this set up. https://www.libraryofthings.co.uk/

but it might give you some ideas on what people do want. Don’t forget that electrical items will need Pat testing and you will need some form of insurances.

They aren't in every town though.

A trailer, only use occasionally so no need to buy

ShittyGlitter · 12/05/2024 21:06

Hrmm a coffee machine comes to kind. We bought a bean to cup machine, but would have preferred to borrow one first to see if it was for us or a pod machine would be best.

Also a sewing machine, expensive and I wouldn't use very often.

Large kids toys for the garden maybe

KnickerlessFlannel · 12/05/2024 21:11

Large stuff like decent ladders and other stuff associated with quite specific DIY jobs.

Cake tins and other specialist baking/cooking stuff

Suitcases

Long term rent of children's bikes so you could then move up a size

Letsnotargue · 12/05/2024 21:20

Carpet cleaner
Roof rack/box
Powertools
Lawn aerator/scarifier

All things that I have occasional use for but I either don’t have, or clog up the house for 99% of their lives.

I could hire the power tools and lawn things, but they’re generally aimed at professionals and have a minimum hire period and are usually over specced for what I need.

Hence why I said it might give you some ideas as to what people want!

Pressure washer

Overthebow · 13/05/2024 13:02

We lease cars, but not sure what else we might rent. Maybe bigger garden toys for children like water tables and little climbing frames and slides, pram/travel systems though not car seats, baby bouncers.

similarminimer · 13/05/2024 15:32

Tent and camping equipment

longdistanceclaraclara · 13/05/2024 15:32

Horsebox

Peonies12 · 13/05/2024 15:33

We have a Library of Things, I have borrowed a pressure washer, power drill, wallpaper stripper. Look at one of their websites for ideas. Our Library of Things is a £10 subscription then free to borrow.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 13/05/2024 15:34

For me it’s things like:
caravans
vans for moving stuff
Carpet cleaners
car valet machines possibly
bouncy castles

It’s for those big jobs that only get done now and again maybe once or twice a year.

AdoraBell · 13/05/2024 15:35

Stepson used to rent out his Go Pro.

MiddleAgedDread · 13/05/2024 15:45

Specialist DIY tools e.g. drills, sanders, jigsaw etc
Pressure washer
Carpet cleaner
Camping equipment
Gardening tools e.g. hedge cutters, large pruning secateurs etc.
Sewing machine
Ladders
Bascially anything big and bulky that you don't need to use very often.

MitchellMummy · 13/05/2024 15:49

I don't need them but often see requests on local groups for things like buggies and car seats for visiting relatives. Wheelchairs for visitors too (or for temporary, e.g. after broken leg etc). We actually bought a cheap wheelchair for post op but kept it in case we need it again - however we do have plenty of storage.

ByUmberViewer · 13/05/2024 15:51

DIY and gardening stuff and I would expect it to be cheap and not to pay more than 5% of the new value of the item in order to rent it for a week.

NewName24 · 13/05/2024 20:02

Wheelchairs

Carpet cleaners

Pressure Washer

Festival trolley maybe ?

Pin0cchio · 14/05/2024 18:01

Specific tools and equipment that you only use perhaps once a year or less.

If i was going to rent these I'd expect to see good quality equipment from decent brands, well maintained and not knackered old gear.

I would expect to pay a small fee. Eg fir a £300 lawn scarifier i might expect to pay £15 to rent it for a weekend- thats assumimg I'd collect and return it.

Pin0cchio · 14/05/2024 18:02

I'd also expect seasonal pricing - so gardening equipment being cheaper in winter for example.

Pin0cchio · 14/05/2024 18:07

Although to be honest Im struggling to think of things I'd use myself (rather than it being a specialist tool where I'd be hiring a tradesperson for the job), where I'd actually need to rent something. Where i live its common for neighbours etc to lend tools etc (i lent mine a leaf blower, he lent me a hedge trimmer). If you're the sort of person who'd use a sewing machine once you probably find more use for it if you buy one. Things like children's bikes you can already rent and to be honest you don't save much versus buying a decent one & selling it on.

Mammma91 · 14/05/2024 18:15

Ladders and a garden strimmer, I don’t have space for either.

NewName24 · 14/05/2024 21:40

Tricky to transport ladders though
