Would you text to ask if they're still coming?

Tradesman was due to come and give a quote today, their suggestion on day and time but they haven't come. I want to go out and enjoy the weekend, shall I text or just assume not coming? I don't want to pee them off because I really need them to do the job! Over an hour late....

yes

dudsville · 11/05/2024 13:18

Personally I wouldn't, I'd consider this to be important info about how they approach work and commitments. I'd head out and enjoy my day and look for another tradesperson.

BusyCM · 11/05/2024 13:21

I def think that's true, I'm gutted though!

Yep this. Who cba with unreliable trades people?

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 11/05/2024 13:24

I would message and say ‘Hi, was expecting you at 12, just to let you know I need to go
out very shortly. Are you on your way?’

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 11/05/2024 13:24

Call them, don’t waste time waiting for a reply to a text. You’ll soon know if you will still want them.

KarenSmithsWeatherBoobs · 11/05/2024 13:26

Absolutely. I have often done this. All you need to say is "can I just check today is still convenient for you and if so do you have a rough idea of time please? Just so I can plan my whereabouts around you. Thanks."

Blanketpolicy · 11/05/2024 13:28

Call them and find out when/if you can expect them. They will have a good excuse.......tradesmen always have a good excuse.....

If they answer the phone

BusyCM · 11/05/2024 13:35

His dog needed an emergency appointment so it completely slipped his mind. He's going to reschedule.

We have a dog who has a health condition so I get it, I'm disappointed though.

Call them.

If you text they will not answer or say they're on their way and won't be.

If no answer the. Text and say

We have waited in and you haven't shown and we are now going out. Please cancel the quote as we have others interested.

susiedaisy1912 · 11/05/2024 13:44

Oh that old chestnut. It's either the dog or the kids that need an ' emergency appointment' whenever they've let you down.

Blanketpolicy · 11/05/2024 13:53

Excellent excuse, throw in a sick dog (child, wife, granny) for sympathy points too.

Don't believe it for a minute.

If your dog was sick on a work day would you forget to phone your work?

thedendrochronologist · 11/05/2024 20:00

No I give them an hour and then that's it!

I think it's a key part of getting the job is tiring up on time for the quote.

DH said trade who kept "forgetting"
To drop off samples said he just didn't want the job and it fizzled out.

Maybe he just doesn't want the job?

Sounds like dating!

BusyCM · 11/05/2024 21:28

If he didn't want the job, why not say when I emailed? I outlined the job, asked if it was something he could do, he said yes and would quote, availability to complete job in June. He then sent a further email asking if today was good for me to come and quote.

Why bother with all that?

The fuck he did.
He's a liar with repertoire of bullshit to pedal out on demand.

They say yes to everything g because if a job they want to do falls through, you'll be their back up .

BusyCM · 11/05/2024 21:36

Ergh.

How the heck do you get someone to do a job then?

OP posts:
FiveTreeHill · 11/05/2024 21:36

Tradesmen like to play games ime

Absolute Bs did his dog need an emergency appointment on a Saturday and he had no one else to take the dog to the vets, on a Saturday ffs

It's like dating. You've got to kiss a lot of frogs. Totally tedious.

Good luck for finding someone else. Reliable, nice, honest ones do exist! I find neighbourhood WhatsApp groups a good source of recommendations. My street virtually has a "preferred supplier" list!

crew2022 · 12/05/2024 07:18

Recently we've had a number of tradesmen let us down (for different jobs). One was actually all booked in and we had our dog in doggy daycare to keep him safe and out the way and the guy text after he was meant to have started to say he'd gone to London for two weeks for a family emergency.
We have had other instances of sudden illness, family crisis and vans breaking down.
I realise now if it's a small job so only lasts a couple of days and they get a better offer for say a weeks worth of work then they just take it.

BusyCM · 12/05/2024 07:56

This would have been a 1-2 day job, medium sized for his type of work.

He also did come highly recommended! That why I'm so gutted. He seemed trustworthy and still let me down. And I have to act grateful if he does turn up.

Did you call ..bet he was on the piss because the sun was out

BusyCM · 12/05/2024 08:07

No I text, I would also have liked to have been out enjoying the sunshine!

I would not have minded him postponing, it's leaving me waiting that I find rude!

OP posts:
Withswitch · 12/05/2024 08:08

Highly recommended means he's busy with a bigger job. Also (my in-laws are all tradespeople so I have some experience here) the sun is out which means he's in the garden drinking with his feet in a paddling pool.
