What do you think a person earns if they do home dog boarding?

Interested to know what people think. I got made redundant and started to do this. What do you think I earn in a month?

I think it depends on how many dogs you have in your home at a time. How can anybody guess?

SoupDragon · 10/05/2024 23:24

Well, it used to cost me a fortune to have someone look after my dog.

mdinbc · 10/05/2024 23:24

It depends on how many dogs you do, of course. If you did 3 or 4 dogs at a time, I would guess around 1000 GBP a month, minus food costs.

I hope you have a business license if you are in a residential area.

hernameisbecca · 10/05/2024 23:25

Our border is £40 per 24 hours and can have up to 6 dogs. She has 2 of her own so £160 every 24 hours I guess.

Lou670 · 10/05/2024 23:25

As in just having dogs in your actual home or registered boarding kennels? My sister owns boarding kennels and doesn't make as much as people imagine. There are a lot of outgoings before making a profit.

Bayleaftree63 · 10/05/2024 23:27

That’s a bit like asking how long is a piece of string? How many dogs? How long does an average dog stay? Do you charge more for bigger breeds? What are your overheads?

I’m guessing not much. Minimum wage?

FuckTheClubUp · 10/05/2024 23:32

You haven’t really given us much to go on…

PlaySuitHelp · 10/05/2024 23:34

Very odd question. Are you trying to work out how much you could earn? Do you think dog owners don't realise the costs involved in looking after dogs?!

NuffSaidSam · 11/05/2024 00:45

It'll either be 80p or £500,000.

Pollipops1 · 11/05/2024 00:57

A lot

fieldsofbutterflies · 11/05/2024 01:06

Not much once you pay for your license, insurance and all other costs involved.

Tigertigertigertiger · 11/05/2024 01:06

We don't know. Just tell us

Icehockeyflowers · 11/05/2024 01:09

Our ‘home from home’ dog minder has a HUGE estate and takes 15 dogs at £35 every 24 hours so £525 a day = £3675 a week so up to £15952 a month or £190K+ per annum But of course this is her max potential income and she doesn’t have 15 dogs every night.

BTW food isn’t an outlay as owners supply the food their dog/s are used to eating.

Invisimamma · 11/05/2024 01:10

My friend takes 3 dogs at a time and charges £40 per night per dog for boarding.
She also offers a walking and daycare service £30 per day for daycare or £20 for a walk.
She walks 3 at a time and has 3 walking slots a day. She's always fully booked so that's £180 a day or £900 a week on just walks, plus boarding income.

She has insurance and a van and fuel to pay for, plus some other overheads like dog treats, occasional hire of a dog park, but even then it's very lucrative her.

DaftyLass · 11/05/2024 01:10

I have a friend who makes a good wage doing this, though in their case, they have a farm, are able to have multiple large outdoor runs, a separate barn, and also offer doggy day camp

This is similar to the one I wrote about.

The place is so big, they don’t have to bring them on little walks. Just let them run around outside instead.

In summer they take far more than 15 dogs but for winter, it’s mainly just weekend stays and doggy daycare.

PieFaces · 11/05/2024 01:21

£25 or £30 per dog per 24 hours.

The big question is how many dogs do you have

Edsta75 · 11/05/2024 01:29

Just looked up a local dog border in my area.
Single dog = £27 per day + £9 booking fee
Pair = £37 per day + £10 booking fee

Computercalendar · 11/05/2024 01:56

Where I live it's about £55 for daycare alone.

crew2022 · 11/05/2024 02:12

Our dog boarder is £35 per night and they can take 5 dogs and are full most of the time.

CarolineFields · 11/05/2024 02:17

It is something I would consider more of a hobby than a salary. I would expect you to have a regular income outside of dog care, to actually be able to do it

Really? all the dog walkers, pet sitters and home borders I know make a fantastic full time income, definitely not a hobby.

napping345 · 11/05/2024 03:09

Not much. I've done it. The agency takes a big cut and I got half the rate the dog owner pays the agency per day. I also have to pay insurance and any other costs associated. It's not something you do to get rich. I think you could do well if you took at least 4 dogs at a time, but I usually had one, two at the most.

Phillipa12 · 11/05/2024 04:27

My friend is a dog walker and home boarder. For home boarding, her house is inspected annually, she is only allowed a certain number of home boarders per night and insurance. She also has custom built dog gates between rooms to separate dogs at night, bedding, two washing machines and don't get me started on the cleaning, this year's been hell because of the rain. She does it because she loves dogs, not for the money!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 11/05/2024 04:40

We pay our dog sitter £35 for 24 hours. She is licensed for 6 dogs but has one of her own. So the maximum she coukd earn if she is full is £175 per day. But most of the time she's not full. We use her for a few weekends a year plus two weeks once a year. I imagine most people do the same.

I'd be amazed if our dog sitter makes more than a few hundred pounds per month. Maybe £1000.
