Currently watching Everest and I had to Google it because I heard it now costs a lot of money to do it. It does. It’s between $32,000 and $60,000 to climb the mountain in the hopes you make it to the summit and don’t die. To me that’s crazy. That’s a lot of money to risk your life and at the end of the day, all you can say is….i climbed Mount Everest…

Fame.

cant think of anything I’d like less than to be famous

Redlarge · 10/05/2024 15:48

Caving. I can see no appeal whatsoever.

If I was billionaire, I would be focusing on THIS planet not jetting off to space. I would want to have trees planted and helping poorer countries with food etc.

Most of them have foundations that do this. They however, cannot overshine governments (and many charities claiming to spend billions together) in the countries they help.
Eg. Mr Beast

DrJonesIpresume · 10/05/2024 15:53

I have no idea what motivates some people to do the things they do.

I've never had the urge to climb mountains, swim in an icy lake or ski. Not to mention go bungee jumping, white water rafting, being lowered in a shark cage, enter the X-Factor, go pot-holing, play golf... the list is endless really.

KohlaParasaurus · 10/05/2024 15:53

Follow a performer around the world going to every one of their performances.

narniabusiness · 10/05/2024 15:56

Personalised number plates seem utterly pointless to me. They cost tens of thousands of pounds and don’t even spell out your name properly anyway.

Soubriquet · 10/05/2024 15:59

Now cage diving with sharks….i would be tempted by that.

I’ve swam with sharks before but they were only little bitty ones.

I agree about climbing Everest, or about any kind of extreme or dangerous physical or sporting endeavour tbh. I'm not an adventurous person!

The main one for me is that I find it hard to understand why so many people aspire to being famous. I would absolutely loathe being famous, especially in the modern era of social media. Fame surely brings far more negatives than positives, and messes a lot of people up!

alloalloallo · 10/05/2024 16:04

Comedycook · 10/05/2024 15:36

See I agree about fancy cars. All I care is about is having a reliable, comfortable car that gets me from a to b. I don't care if it's flashy or not. As for houses, I really disagree. I absolutely would love a bigger flashier house but that's for me to enjoy rather than impressing other people.

I’m weirdly obsessed with tiny houses - like shepherds huts. Or living in a campervan. Once all ky kids bugger off, my dream home is a little hobbit type house near me.

I’m sure I’ll live in it for about 5 minutes and get pissed off with it, but I stalk the local estate agents website on the off chance it’s up for sale.

Cars - as long as I can get from A to B in relative comfort, it’s reliable and I can get a week’s food shop in the boot, I’m happy. DH is the petrol head in our house.

Bungee jumping/parachuting out of a plane. Anything like that where you are putting your life completely into a tiny bit of equipment. I totally get that people want an adrenaline rush but you can get adrenaline from sports and safer stuff, it's on so many people's bucket lists and I just feel utter terror at the thought for myself!

Same as pp, bigger house (surely just involves bigger bills and more work) or expensive cars. My car is newish to me but not hugely expensive, it has some nicer features than my decades old Micra but the ones like Tesla's that self drive etc - not for me!

I did a skydive from 15,000 feet (2.8 miles). I wanted to do it and am glad I did and had that experience, but I'll be honest, the actual fast descent from leaving the plane to the parachute opening up was physically horrific and absolutely fricking terrifying.

One thing I find baffling is people wanting to go and live - or even just holiday - in Dubai.

Soubriquet · 10/05/2024 16:04

God yeah. As a famous person you really have to get thick skin. You can’t do anything without some form of media picking it up and you will get both positive and negative comments. I couldn’t do it.

Caving, scuba diving, abseiling, roller coasters, parachute jumps etc wouldn’t want to do any of those or anything of that ilk

I’d love to climb some mountains, walk the Great Wall or trek the Sahara, but I’m too lazy to fundraise (the charity I work for is always running these sort of events, you have to raise several thousand pounds)

alloalloallo · 10/05/2024 16:09

I find caving and scuba diving baffling too - I’m massively claustrophobic and the idea of caving brings me out in a cold sweat. I tried scuba diving and the mask and mouthpiece made me panic. Snorkelling as well.

catin8oots · 10/05/2024 16:12

Caving
Potholing
Scuba diving
Bungee jumping
Sky diving

Basically anything that involves heights or small spaces

A colleague is preparing to row the Atlantic for his 'mental health'. Fundraising 200k to do it, not for charity, for the kit / boat / whatever else they need.

Please tell me people are rolling their eyes and refusing to donate

DancefloorAcrobatics · 10/05/2024 16:23

I can understand the stuff that requires some sort of bravery (like skydiving!), endurance and fitness.

I get the mount Everest thing- sadly I can't do it, the altitude would kill me!

What I don't get is repeat visits to places like Disney Land or Dubai- its all man-made plastic type stuff! Or that fancy car, designer clothes and jewellery.

Just not me!

Mairzydotes · 10/05/2024 16:23

I don't aspire to run marathon or half marathon.

I don't understand people who scrimp all year , and deny themselves things , just to have a week in the sun.

AmeliaEarhart · 10/05/2024 16:27

100% agree on caving. Especially since reading about the poor chap who got stuck and died in the Nutty Putty cave in Utah. No thank you.

PuttingDownRoots · 10/05/2024 17:10

Bizarrely... skydiving was one of the most relaxing things I've ever done. Same with gliding.
I cant explain it. A few seconds of terror followed by calmness.

Oh blimey I watched a whole TikTok series on that. Stuff of nightmares

This 💯

But before Everest tourism the Sherpa's led a very hard, basic subsistence life, Many of the young men used to go to India to try to find work. It's hard to see that the Sherpas would be better off, if people stopped climbing Everest.

Allwelcone · 10/05/2024 18:22

A cruise! Whhhyyy. They look awful! why spend so much money on THAT.... so limited!

Riapia · 10/05/2024 18:29

Yes, me too. I’d also love to go to Antarctica.
It’s very cold, Antarctica.

the80sweregreat · 10/05/2024 18:33

Living in Dubai , although I have it on good authority that it's great. I'll never know.
Sky diving or parachuting out of airplanes
Bungee jumping

shivermetimbers77 · 10/05/2024 18:37

People who join long waiting lists for a bag and then spend thousands and thousands of pounds on said bag. I just don’t get it at all..
