Do you see bullfinches in your garden?

I love bullfinches but have only seen one in my garden. We have lots of greenfinches and goldfinches.

Does anyone have bullfinches in their garden? And if so, what seems to attract them? Is there anything I can grow to entice them to visit?

We see them very occasionally. We regularly get goldfinches and greenfinches, but bullfinches not so much even though we have stuff they like in the feeders.

They used to drive my FIL nuts in the autumn when flocks of them would strip his fruit trees. I've never seen him so cross Grin

Yes. They seem to like the grass and dandelions in it. They have only come the last few years as the garden gets more mature though and trees at a decent size.

So lovely to hear of people’s bullfinch visitors. Yours sounds fabulous @Hollyhocksandlarkspur

I have room for a few trees so am going to plant a crabapple and some apple trees.

I get them, usually at least one nesting pair, sometimes two - it's a long narrow plot so they can establish separate territories. They are so beautiful, the females as well as the males, and I like that odd meeping sound they make. I don't put out food for them, but the place is fairly wild so there are plenty of seeds and berries and buds. I read somewhere that they like to nest at least two metres off the ground in quite dense shrubbery.

Was watching one yesterday as we sat in our garden. I don't know what attracts them. We think it's nesting close by though.

We have bullfinches visiting the garden - I mostly see them on the raspberries. But also pottering around in the grass.

Niger seeds are very good to attract the finches - goldfinches go mad for them.

For bird-lovers, the Merlin Bird ID app is great to find out what is singing in your garden. It records the sounds and identifies the bird song live - I think we have 20 + different birds so far.

They love the old teasel heads and seeds in our garden, worth putting up with the spikes to see them feast in autumn, great for the bees in summer too!

We have loads of teasel this year (self seeded from a single plant 2 years ago), I’m hoping we will get a lot of finches, the gold finches love teasel.

We have lots of teasels which I often see goldfinches on.
