Hotel bill - normal or rude?

Inyourwildestdreams · 10/05/2024 05:55

Woken at 2am by someone fumbling around outside hotel door. Heard something being posted through and went to check to find a bill posted under the door detailing what we owe. We’ve not even had our final meals here yet! I found it quite rude 🙈
Staying in a “nice” hotel for a special occasion and it’s been a bit of a disappointing stay so maybe I’m just being sensitive 😅

That's bizarre, and I would not be happy with that! Why would they not deal with the bill at checkout. I am a light sleeper and wouldn't be able to go back to sleep after this, I would complain about it.

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 10/05/2024 06:09

Normal to have the bill posted but not normal to be woken up.

IbisDancer · 10/05/2024 06:18

Very normal in hotels that cater to business travellers, most often done in the US. It’s so business travellers don’t need to go by front desk and get a printed receipt for their expenses. Business travellers are often leaving very early in the morning- before breakfast. Hotels have done this since you’re able to authorise auto payment to a credit card and just leave your room key in the room and go. So no formal check out needed.

It evolved as a courtesy, so certainly not rude

They aren’t supposed to wake you up, but as you say you only heard a bit of fumbling by the door I think you’re a bit of a light sleeper too. I do hear it when they do it, but I know it’s just my hotel bill so I go right back to sleep.

Completely normal and is meant to avoid delays at checkout.

eurochick · 10/05/2024 06:34

Very normal. It sometimes wakes me too. I'm a light sleeper.

BitOutOfPractice · 10/05/2024 06:36

Totally standard practice. No idea how / why they were fumbling loud enough ru wake you though.

LesmisPhantom · 10/05/2024 06:36

Completely normal. I’ve never noticed what time it’s out there but it’s usually there when I wake up.

SpringOne · 10/05/2024 06:36

Wow, had no idea this was normal, never happened to me. But I don't really stay in places that would cater to business travelers like that I guess. I would still be annoyed! Surely now they can email the bill if it's needed before checkout instead of putting it through at 2am.

Sunnyandsilly · 10/05/2024 06:37

This is totally normal. And for me it’s a great idea, usually it means you don’t need to check out if you are not consuming more, the hotel doesn’t know you’re having breakfast. Can’t believe you feel it’s rude 😂

twoandcooplease · 10/05/2024 06:55

2am! No thats not normal or acceptable

Inyourwildestdreams · 10/05/2024 06:55

😂😂😂 I think I’m just being grumpy because it’s been a bit of a disappointing stay tbh. I’m a very light sleeper so have been awake since but that’s not their fault. Large country estate type hotel not really business traveler type - although I can see why it would be useful in those circumstances.

We stay in hotels regularly and have never had this so it just felt a bit “right, we’re done with you - here’s what you owe” 😂

As a side note - it’s a huge hotel. If they’re giving these to every room the paper waste is ridiculous! 3 page receipt (only front page is actual bill) in an envelope with a plastic window.

Tell me you don’t stay in hotels without telling me you don’t stay in hotels. It’s totally normal, the staff do it at night, when it’s quiet and when the bar/restaurants have closed so they capture all expense and then go round the rooms,

Op, it isn’t personal. And yes it goes to everyone checking out, and yes most people need a paper receipt for expenses. It really isn’t about you

CMOTDibbler · 10/05/2024 07:39

I've had it loads, even in in US resort hotels and its very useful as you have time to check it through and make sure nothing has been charged to your room before you go to checkout - the number of times people have charged drinks/meals/treatments to my room is mad and its much easier to go to reception and let them get the receipts etc out to cross check before you are in a line of people

Moltenpink · 10/05/2024 07:44

imagine every guest checking through their bill and checking out at exactly the same time… if they’ve all seen it in advance, it makes the queue go down much faster. If you have any queries you would be more likely to sort out first thing before breakfast, rather than waiting till check out. Also as someone else said, you might also use the fast check out if no issues. Makes the whole process much more time efficient

Yes, you’re right, my Disney hotel did this, so it is also resorts as well,

McSpoot · 10/05/2024 09:29

These days, I'm more likely to wake up to an email with my bill in it on the morning of my checkout, but something slide under the door in the middle of the night is not unusual.

Normal to have the bill posted but not normal to be woken up.

This.

VenusClapTrap · 10/05/2024 10:51

This was certainly normal twenty years ago when I used to travel a lot for work. It always woke me up. I am a light sleeper.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/05/2024 10:56

Wow, I travel for work most weeks and have stayed in a range of hotels and have never had this. I'm quite surprised it's common for other posts. I've been travelling like this for around 9 years. Also can't think of a time when it's happened when travelling for leisure either.

DecoratingDiva · 13/05/2024 18:11

Totally normal to have the bill slipped under the door or emailed but the waking you up while they do it is not normal.

reluctantbrit · 13/05/2024 18:18

Normal but I often either get an email at any time the day before or when we were at dinner, so between 7-10pm.

jamimmi · 13/05/2024 19:49

Last time I.stayed in a lovley London hotel, the bill arrived by email at breakfast. Far better idea, no need to check out either !

I've worked in many hotels. all bills were given at check out or when requested if before.
