Anyone good at identifying insects?

My bathroom has got some sort of fly infestation. They are tiny (about 2 mm) but there seem to more and more of them everyday despite me hoovering and wiping them away. I don't think they are drain flies. And they don't seem to be coming from the pot plant in the room. We need to replace the wooden window in there which is well past its best but they don't seem to be coming from the wood.

They seem to come out at night and are mostly on the ceiling and in one corner of the wall.

Massively magnified pics attached.

The pictures are too big, trying to work out how to make them smaller!

Looks like it might be a fungus gnat? We’ve had plants get them before and they’re a nightmare

I don't know what it's called, but it looks like the type of fly that always appears in bathrooms if there is mould anywhere.

@INeedToClingToSomething I think it’s definitely a fungus gnat. If you look at the Wikipedia page for fungus gnat or just look at images of them online, you’ll see them (there are several varieties so what really matters is that little two segmented top bit and then the long, thin body for a gnat, and the wing style).

If you Googled fungus gnats, you’ll see everyone gets rid of them with those yellow stickers. If you want a faster more humane option, look up how to make a liquid gnat trap. I use a really shallow tiny Tupperware, some raspberry kombucha (both sweet fruity smell and fermentation for them to be attracted to) and dish soap. Mix the dish soap and the kombucha (or instead, a bit of squash and apple cider vinegar)together until the top of the fluid has a sheen. They’ll be attracted to the smell, but when they break the surface tension of the soap, they drown immediately, as opposed to trying to pull their wings off the yellow fly stickers.

Thanks everyone. Just been up hoovering and wiping the buggers away. I don't have any kombucha or apple cider vinegar so have made a trap of some sugar solution and dish soap. See if that works, if not will get some proper ingredients tomorrow.

I've had fungus gnats before in pot plants but they tend to hover around the plants and fly about if disturbed. These do look similar in terms of how they fly but they are blacker. I have one pot plant in the bathroom but there are no gnats on it/in the soil.

There is some rotten wood in the window frame but they aren't on that either. They are on the walls and ceiling mainly. They like the light.

I'll get my DH to look for leaks tomorrow under the bath and sink. I've looked at much as I can and can't see anything. I hope to go it's not the window as that isn't a quick fix although will rapidly move up our very long to do list now!!

They disappear in the day which is weird. Where do they go?!?

I've also put bleach down the drains just in case. I'll run some boiling water down there in a few minutes.

This is so gross I need to find a fix! 😩😩😩😩
