An air con unit that actually works?

Thinking ahead to the summer and hot bedrooms, but don't want to waste hundreds on something that won't work. Due to move next year so won't be fitting anything permanent.

Thank you in advance

Honestly? Don't bother. We had one (black and decker I think) and it was so noisy there was no way it could be used at night. It would cool the room down before we went to bed but the bricks of the house were so hot it heated back up within half an hour of turning off.

You also have to have a window open to vent it which let's heat back in anyway so they're really inefficient.

I would wait it out this year and then look at having permanent air con installed when you move.

@WhyDoesItAlways thank you for your experience - this is exactly how I envisage them to be 😔

I was so disappointed, I bought it with high expectations of not being a sweaty mess in the summer but it was a let down. We had proper aircon installed this year so waiting for the heat to arrive so we can try it out!

We bought a portable air conditioning unit, for our garden office, it is very effective at cooling, but it is noisy. Remember you would need to use the hose, so a window would need to be open too.

Hi @WhyDoesItAlways can I ask how much it was to have it installed, and can you pick certain rooms only, or is it an all-or-nothing thing? We have a three storey and our attic room becomes unbearable in summer.

I love mine. Yes, its expensive to run.

I set the temp to about 17 degrees an hour before I go to bed. Shut the bedroom door, and when I go in, the room is so cool. I thrn set the timer fir about 4 hours, and have a wonderful cool night. You get used to the noise realky easily. I wouldn’t be without

It sort of depends on the structure of your house. Ours is a 2 storey solid brick so we have it in all the upstairs bedrooms through grates in the ceiling and ducting in the loft which you would be able to do on your top floor. You may be able to run ducting through your walls to your lower rooms but as out house is solid brick we had to have a separate unit downstairs which we have in the hall as our downstairs is pretty open plan with all rooms leading off the hall so it cools all of them from the one unit in the hall. It cost around 7k including extra electrical work as we needed a new consumer unit. It's not as expensive as I thought it would be to run though. I was using it to heat in the winter and spent around £3 a month, not sure if cooling will cost more.
