Teachers pension

Hi, probably a silly question but I can’t seem to find an answer. Have a teachers pension from England which had my retiring age as 60 when it started ( yes I’m that old). I moved to Scotland, continued teaching and English pension marked as deferred. I will be 60 soon but not able to retire yet. Can I receive my English pension which is due on my 60th birthday, confirmed byTPS, even if I’ve not actually retired?

Yes I claimed my NHS pension from 57 and TPS is the same. It probably won't be reduced either if it's that old a pension.

Oh, that’s good news, thank you!

I think you should double check with TPS but........ I think that you won't receive if unless you put in an application for your pension /lump sum, even if you have reached your normal pension age. The application can be done online.

Be careful. There used to be a regulation that if you took a teacher's pension and continued to teach, your pension was reduced to take accout of the teaching salary you were still receiving.

I retired from the pensions industry a while ago now, but I would check first before taking your pension.

There is also an extremely helpful website which effectively replaces the old TES site - for teachers, lots of queries about pensions on there -
https://staffroom.boards.net/

Dave Fountain (ex teacher) comments on there plus has his own website / YouTube vids

You can receive your TP now if you wish, with some actuarial reduction. As long as youre not paying into the TP in England, your salary as a teacher in Scotland wont be affected.

It’s a minefield. I had advice from specific teachers pension advisers a year or so again, they said if anything changed or I had questions to go back to them, I found out about an AVC I had forgotten about (!) contacted them and they said the amount too small for them to deal with. Have asked again saying can I discuss all my pensions in the light of it as it may make the difference of at least a year earlier I can retire, but waiting on answer. I just need someone to discuss it all and the tax implications of early retirement with me. Seems silly to go to a different advisor when they are teacher specialists and have all my previous details. I realise I will need to pay for further discussions and told them this but they have just not answered so far. Never thought having some extra money would be causing me such distress!🙂🤷‍♀️
