Non integrated kitchen appliances

Sorry for the dull post.

But if you have put in a fitted kitchen and you haven't used integrated washing machine/dishwasher etc, can you tell me why? What are the advantages?

Do you ever look at your washing machine and wish it was hidden behind a cupboard door?

Never had a fitted kitchen with integrated appliances. I don't mind them being visible and I assume they are easier to maintain and replace if they are not integrated (plus I know I can replace them myself rather than paying someone). I have white cabinets and so white washing machine and dishwasher don't stand out too much. I guess if I had chosen a navy cabinets it would be different.

Plus I have more options size-wise - it won't matter if the appliances stick out a centimetre or two if they are not integrated, but an integrated appliance must fit exactly or the door won't look right. Plus I guess integrated appliances must be a tiny bit smaller to allow for the door etc. There may be fewer options on integrated appliances, including fewer deals available.

We didn’t because we bought a new build and we already had the appliances so didn’t want to pay more. I’ve noticed that often when people replace them they get free standing as less expensive and more choice I think. It’s never bothered me that they aren’t built in and I like having magnets and pictures on the fridge

I've never had integrated appliance but do have a fitted kitchen.

You can choose the make and model you want with free standing. I assume it's also easier to get round the back of free standing if you need to sort out minor repairs.

Integrated appliances are considerably more expensive to replace (apart from the faff of installing them)! A quick look at an electrical retailer will show you the difference in prices.

I had a perfectly serviceable dishwasher, fridge-freezer and washing machine when we had our kitchen re-done last year and didn't even think about replacing them

Thanks for the replies,

I did wonder if choice/cost might be the reason.

I'm looking at new kitchens and while I think they look nicer integrated you have raised some valid points.

I've never regretted it. It just adds to the list of shit that can go wrong with appliances, IMO.

For example, had an integrated fridge. Fridge broke. Couldn't be repaired. New fridges no longer come in those dimensions....the kitchen company no longer exists to make a new cabinet that will take the new size etc etc.

Free standing, if something needs replaced, you slide it out, replace it.

If you are redoing the kitchen they can work with your appliances exact measurements so no odd gaps. They will look OK. I have integrated and when the dishwasher leaked it warped the door which had to be replaced and I always notice how slightly different it is.

I don't like a fitted kitchen so dh dismantled most of ours and we just have freestanding things. I'm not bothered about stuff being hidden away as long as it's kept clean and tidy.
