Breakfast at Budapest Hotel for 31EUR each? Am I misunderstanding this?

I've booked to go with my partner to stay at The Corinthia Hotel in Budapest in a couple of months and had not booked breakfast, so emailed to see if we can add it on. I had an email back to say

Let me kindly inform you that we can add the breakfast for EUR 31,-/person/occassion for breakfast. Should you decide to add breakfast to your reservation, please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can assist you accordingly.

I think I'm sounding thick here but 31EUR per person per day is a bit steep no?Am I misunderstanding this? typically when I book a room say on booking.com and add breakfast it's per stay, not per day?

Anyone stay at this hotel to corroborate?

Might be worth searching if there's any cafes nearby that do breakfast - that'd work out a lot cheaper.

Budapest is lovely by the way.

LauderSyme · 08/05/2024 09:15

I haven't stayed at this hotel but I don't think you are misunderstanding. What was written definitely says per person per day. Could it be a typo for 13?

HoneyButterPopcorn · 08/05/2024 09:15

So that’s what - £23/4? (Don’t know the conversation rate).

must be a bloody good breakfast. Not worth it unless it’s absolutely amazing and they give you caviar omelette! Better to get out and find a nice cafe for a hot chocolate and pastry.

Breakfast prices in hotels are often insanely high and I don’t think EUR31 is that unusual. Budapest is full of lovely cafes and you’ll be able to find something delicious for a fraction of that.

ChristmasGutPunch · 08/05/2024 09:17

That's a very normal price for a 4/5 star hotel. Definitely just eat out instead it will be better and half the price.

JSMill · 08/05/2024 09:17

When we were at the W in Amsterdam in March, breakfast was 32 euros. Of course we didn't go for it.

KenAdams · 08/05/2024 09:18

Yep that sounds about right at a Corinthia. Hotels charge per day as do booking.com, but the latter just show you the price per stay.

Divebar2021 · 08/05/2024 09:19

I’ve had hotels in London charge £25 for breakfast so I don’t think that’s a typo.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 08/05/2024 09:19

Yes I’d say that could be the case. Often it’s rolled up with the room price but if you add it on later it’s more. It’s the convenience of having it in the hotel. And often if you haven’t got it rolled up with the room price they add it on per day because you might have breakfast some days and not others. Bit steep though - we would add breakfast for maybe up to twenty euro but not 31!

I used to live in Budapest. The Corinthia is beautiful. We used to go there on Sundays for their champagne brunch. I can’t remember what it was then but not cheap. So I can imagine that their breakfast would be expensive. There are lots of cafes around you can go to for breakfast.

notacooldad · 08/05/2024 09:21

Breakfast at the hotel the travel agent booked us into in Japan was £35 per person per day. The agent strongly advised us to tell him to cancel breakfast as there was loads of fabulous cafes nearby fir the equivalent of a couple of quid. I suspect it's the same here.
31€ is expensive but not outrageous so for some hotels.

TheNoonBell · 08/05/2024 09:21

There are plenty of places nearby to get breakfast (and dinner), I usually stay at the Radisson Beke a few doors down and love the amount of nearby pubs/eateries.

If you want a great granny's kitchen style Hungarian dinner, try Firkász Restaurant on Tatra Utca (about a 20 minute walk but worth the trip).

Bjorkdidit · 08/05/2024 09:22

I don't stay in posh places, but 31 euro (so about £27) seems very high for one breakfast.

I don't think I've ever seen it above £15 to £20 and that was in London, which I would have thought would be more expensive than Budapest unless The Corinthian is a very swanky hotel.

Peridot1 · 08/05/2024 09:24

@Bjorkdidit - it is a very swanky hotel. Five star.

SheilaFentiman · 08/05/2024 09:24

Swanky hotel breakfasts in London are over £20 now. Park plaza is something like £25.

£26.70.

You are not just paying for food though, you are paying for the service and the environment.
It would be worth it once or twice and then going out the rest of the time.
I must say, hot chocolate and croissant for breakfast sounds dreadful!!!

Fluffypuppy1 · 08/05/2024 09:26

It sounds quite expensive, but is a typical hotel breakfast rate. As PP have said, check what’s near to your hotel. On a recent trip to NYC our hotel breakfast was around £130 (minus tip!) each day for 3 of us. We had a couple of hotel breakfasts, and the rest of the time went to Starbucks a few minutes walk away.

mjf981 · 08/05/2024 09:27

Yes it'll be correct. Might be worth it if its a buffet, and fills you up for the day (so you skip lunch).

CeeceeBloomingdale · 08/05/2024 09:28

That's fairly typical for a decent hotel. just eat out if it's more than you want to pay.

Seeline · 08/05/2024 09:28

It's £11/pp/pn at a Premier Inn!!
Doesn't sound too bad for a posh 5* hotel if you want the convenience of not having to search for your breakfast.

Bjorkdidit · 08/05/2024 09:30

You can see that on booking.com that it is indeed £27 pppd and it's a buffet, so not exactly service worth paying for. For that price I'd expect my toast to come out of the conveyor belt toaster correctly toasted after exactly one pass and for it to be guarded by a member of staff while I went to get my coffee so it's not stolen by other guests.

If this is what you get, it looks OK, but nothing ground breaking. I'd probably give it a pass or perhaps take it once, but go out to local cafes on other days, but I suppose it depends on whether you like to eat enough at breakfast time for it to be worthwhile.

Medschoolmum · 08/05/2024 09:30

I really love a good hotel breakfast so don't mind paying over the odds for them. We tend to eat a huge breakfast on holiday and not bother with lunch. But if you don't want to, don't bother... there will be plenty of cafes etc where you can get something for a fraction of the price!

eurochick · 08/05/2024 09:31

It's The Corinthia so it sounds about right.

In a city popular with tourists, you're not likely to have to 'search' for breakfast opportunities.

I was in Granada last week, passed up the not very enticing looking hotel breakfast and had a lovely breakfast of two coffees, churros and pan con tomate at a pavement cafe for 7 euro.

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 08/05/2024 09:32

Sounds about right. It’s what we usually pay. I love a 5* hotel breakfast.
