Perioral dermatitis

I have an as yet undiagnosed rash on my face which I think is perioral dermatitis.

I have been to the pharmacy, and GP 4 times now. I've tried Clotrimazole, Fucidin, Hydrocortisone, Fucidin and hydrocortisone, Metronidazole Gel, and most recently Eumovate and Calciptriol as the GP thought it was maybe psoriasis.

I mentioned PD to her and she said it's unlikely if I'm not b12 or folate deficient, so I've had blood tests and have an appointment in 2 weeks to discuss, and see how the Calciptriol is working.

I can safely say, it's not. I did a week of Eumovate which almost completely cleared it, but as soon as I stopped it, it's flared back up. I've been swimming today and it's flipping sore, stingy, tight, I feel absolutely miserable. I don't know what else to try.

I have so many weddings this year and just feel so self conscious.

I had peri oral dermatologist it took a private doctor 1 minute to diagnose me but umpteen visits the the NHS doctors! Nothing will shift it apart from lymecycline the course took 2 months to clear up the dermatitis! Honestly you have my sympathies. Don’t use any of those products you listed above especially the steroids, they will make it worse!

I have had this. The only thing that cleared it was antibiotics, followed by azelaic acid cream. I keep the azelaic acid cream going now and it works to keep it at bay.

I had this and found Nadine Baggot

I followed her advise and eventually it went away but took ages I also noticed that Dr Sam Bunting had also done a video too

I've been referred to dermatology, but it's a 2 year waiting list!! I'm considering going private but no idea re cost. It's just miserable.

I had perioral dermatitis a couple of months ago, after some Google research I went to the GP and was prescribed an 8 week course of Lymecycline.

It took about 3/4 weeks for it to start clearing up but it's now completely gone.

I'd try and see another GP and insist on antibiotics.

I had similar and buy a topical antibiotic gel privately through an online chemist. Anytime I get the burning sore blister coming one dab and it's gone.
It also seemed to stop it coming as often even though I use the gel very sparingly.
I had same issue with all the other creams as you but I remembered before my actual wedding they had given me the stuff I now buy and it worked then. For some reason subsequent GP's would try all the usual creams again.

It's called Rozex Gel and was about £20 the tube lasts about a year.
It did you through my GP to check so I'm not just a crazy buying whatever I want. It just works.

YouAndMeAndThem · 07/05/2024 19:59

I've used rosex, it's metronidazole gel. I just watched the Nadine Baggot YouTube video and it's been extremely informative so thank you for that! Sorry can't remember your user name to tag 🙈

Have just submitted an Superdrug online doctor perioral dermatitis order! Have requested Doxycycline, so I'll hopefully be approved for that! In the meantime, I might try the Metronidazole again as well. Such a nightmare!

Good Luck Op

YouAndMeAndThem · 08/05/2024 14:04

I have had my Doxycycline approved via Superdrug online doctor but the advice is that it may take 2 months to see any difference 🙈 did anyone find it helped quicker?

Yes, mine worked faster than 2 months; it had cleared enough to be virtually unnoticeable. I think because I was using the azelaic acid as well. I can't remember what antibiotic I had.

Forhecksake · 09/05/2024 21:49

I have had this problem off and on for ages, but the thing that made the biggest difference was changing toothpaste to one without mint or SLS.
