In your opinion, which supermarket has the best bakery?

I absolutely love the Lidl bakery, I’ve never had a bad thing from there. I loved the cheese pretzels but I think they might’ve discontinued them now Sad It’s all so cheap too! The Tesco bakery is good too, I like their bread batons, the tiger bread is lovely.

M&S

I don’t understand the praise for Morrison’s bakery. I find it okay but there’s nothing delicious.

Depends on the item. If we're talking doughnuts, it's Lidl hands down. But I don't care for their apple turnovers: any time I've bought them they've been a bit soggy and flat - Tesco turnovers are nice and crispy.

Tesco also have some custard tarts - pastel del nata or something - which are absolutely to die for. Ooh, and a chocolate and custard twist thing that I've not seen in a while.

Excuse me while I run an errand 😉

Morrisons is really good sadly do not have one close to me

some of Co ops freshly baked bread is really nice especially the olive bread

Funnywonder · 07/05/2024 13:16

I'm in NI and I'm going to say Dunnes, just for their apple tart, which is probably the best shop bought one I've ever tasted. If I get there early enough, they're still warm. Only £2. I haven't tried any of their bakery bread, but probably should!

When I'm not passing Dunnes, then it's Tesco. Love their olive loaf and cheese topped rolls.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/05/2024 14:32

Co op. Pretty sure they have the same supplier as Tesco, but Co ops near us bake the stuff off better.

Uncooperativefingers · 07/05/2024 14:37

Morrisons over here too. They also have the best cream cake selection by far...

Lidl does have the best pretzels though

M&S is too full of random fashion crap: yumnuts are just bleurgh. I want good, solid classics!

Sainsburys!
Their ring doughnuts are so pillowy and light. I don't t normally eat doughnuts! I also love their white chocolate and raspberry cookies.

I concur. Only the fresh ones though not the five in a bag ones.

AllCatsAreAutistic · 07/05/2024 15:03

Morrisons are surprisingly good, though I thought nobody on Mumsnet used instore bakeries on account of GERMS.

CallThatCloudy · 07/05/2024 15:07

Lidl baguettes are brill. Sainsburys baguettes are the worse.

I always go with Sainsbury's. I avoid M&S because theirs is made up to a year in advance, fully baked, kept frozen and then unboxed and put on a shelf saying "freshly baked in store" and I'm not even going to start on what goes in their products

Most of the stuff is part baked and frozen, sent to the store and then fully baked and put out like all the other supermarkets do. It's only a few things like the cupcakes which are defrosted and put out because obviously the buttercream would melt if you tried to bake it 🥲 but I freeze homemade cakes all the time as do professional bakeries and they are absolutely fine and still moist if packaged and frozen correctly. I was a baker and worked in both commercial supermarket and smaller local bakeries.

Precipice · 07/05/2024 15:13

I like Waitrose bread and rolls - the one they call the San Francisco one and the rolls that are very similar.

Lidl has a similar bread (it's a not super sour sourdough), but it was a bit worse IMO.

I only have access to a small Sainsburys and they have nothing I'd like. I only like crunchy bread, but they only have soft rolls. Maybe the bigger ones have something decent.

rickandmorts · 07/05/2024 15:15

But to answer your question OP I have a bit of a soft spot for co-op bakery, love their Nutella filled croissants!! And their maple pecan plaits are nice too. Don't have a Lidl near us but I've heard good things about their bakery.

Iloveyoubut · 07/05/2024 15:16

Morrisons by a mile.

sarahc336 · 07/05/2024 15:21

Morrisons hands down

ClipClopperDontStopper · 07/05/2024 15:27

Have I just been to shit Morrisons? Their croissants are nice enough but everything else is underwhelming.

Anonymousemouses · 07/05/2024 15:27

I used to like Sainsbury's bread and they are the supermarket I use for deliveries - but their bread has been awful for a couple of years. They were better when the groceries came from a supermarket miles away, but since the new, big store has opened in our town, the bread has gone downhill. Often far too doughy which makes it pretty inedible, or stale tasting. Their (jam) doughnuts remain nice though.

Morrisons is my favourite for fresh bread, followed by Tesco.

Unfortunately Morrisons don't deliver fresh bread, so unless I go there I can't have it.

caringcarer · 07/05/2024 15:37

Lidl.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 07/05/2024 15:41

I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by the pastries and tiger bread in my corner shop Co-op. The pecan danish and the danish with custard and hazelnuts are both fantastic, and I could eat the tiger bread loaf in one go. I say this having been devoted to M&S and Waitrose bakeries for years.

MaggieFS · 07/05/2024 15:43

Lidl.

Tesco and Waitrose also good.

Sainsbury's ok for loaves. Awful for most other things. Not sure how their "baguettes" even qualify to be called such. They are grim.

Blarn · 07/05/2024 15:48

Co-op for me. Their loaves and pastries are always fresh and when they are not they are greatly reduced!

That's well known, however the M&S stuff is fully baked, then frozen for upto 12 months before being simply unpackaged in store. Plus the ingredients and manufacturing process are further issues for me so I just avoid their bakery products in general

Evidence of this is....?

VelvetTurtle · 07/05/2024 15:59

Morrisons, don't like Lidl bakery I find them gross all open like that for anyone to touch and I've witnessed big flies on them and also someone dropped and doughnut and the person they was with told them to pick it up and put it back 🤢

Moments ago it was 'baked in store ' and now it's "defrosted" in store... Which is it?

RedRosie · 07/05/2024 16:08

I like sourdough, but don't always want it. Do any of the supermarkets do decent, unsliced wholemeal bread anymore? It's like a vanished species.
