Shoes for pre-teens - OTT?

DD is 12 and asked for this (Nike link)pair of Nike trainers. She fell over on the way home
from school yesterday and says that her shoes have barely any grip and are slippery when it's raining.

She already has
winter boots (no use now, obviously!) and boots for spring/autumn, hiking boots and a pair of sandals for the summer.
Plus two pairs of crocs and indoor gym shoes. Clearly doesn't wear these out but they still take up space by the front door.

Would it be OTT to buy her a pair of "wet weather trainers"? Especially if I don't know if she'd actually wear them as Nike seems to be the brand of choice?

Hi, op. So from what I am reading from your list, she doesn’t have outdoor trainers right now? She has ‘indoor gym shoes’. So I don’t think it’s excessive to buy outdoor trainers and she will probably get lots of use of them over the summer. She doesn’t seem to have many spring/summer shoes.
My 11 yo dd currently has:

  • Ugg dupes
  • one pair of New Balance trainers for sport (combined recent birthday present from family as £££)
  • One pair cheaper Nikes for school PE and for walking home from school if needed.
  • one pair Adidas for going round town
  • Crocs
  • sandals for summer (May need new pair depending on size for this year)
i realise it’s really expensive but TK Maxx or Vinted, Deichmann can be good plus I tend to try to buy when they are on sale.

Or could she use the indoor gym shoes also as outdoor trainers and give them a wash?

PeterJohnson · 07/05/2024 06:35

No, she uses the indoor gym shoes 5 times a week.

She uses the ones I linked above as outdoor, everyday trainers but they're seemingly not great in wet weather.

What shoes has she asked for, does she have something in mind?

Most fashion trainers will be crap in wet weather tbh. Perhaps some proper waterproof walking type trainers? Or would she refuse to wear them...

thedendrochronologist · 07/05/2024 06:54

Your op is very confusing

Does she have the Nike trainers or has she asked for them?

What shoes was she wearing when she slipped ?

alloweraoway · 07/05/2024 06:56

she needs outdoor trainers and she needs a shoe rack in her room

fieldsofbutterflies · 07/05/2024 06:58

Is the pair linked in your post what she was wearing when she fell over?

She does need proper trainers.

liveforsummer · 07/05/2024 07:03

Doesn't sound like very many pairs of shoes summer wise. I'd ask her to pick something suitable rather than just choosing for her. My DD's both wear converse and never had any issues with slipping in wet weather

alloweraoway · 07/05/2024 07:10

but also, why is she falling over in school shoes with no grip? Sounds like she is wearing dainty "girls" shoes rather than proper "live your life" shoes. Boys don't fall over in the rain cos their shoes have no grip

PeterJohnson · 07/05/2024 07:13

She asked for the Nike ones I linked. I bought them for her. She wears those to school and was wearing them when she slipped.

My boys fall over all the time! School no longer allows the boots they used to wear.

She was wearing the trainers linked in the OP - I wouldn't really describe them as dainty girls shoes?

That is not how I read it, I read it she WANTS those trainers, because her school shoes dont have enough grip to walk home in

PeterJohnson · 07/05/2024 07:45

@alloweraoway she wanted the ones I linked so I bought them for her, @fieldsofbutterflies is correct, those are the ones she was wearing and are her "school shoes".

MintCrumble · 07/05/2024 07:48

In answer to the OP, do you mean you want to buy her a pair of wet weather trainers that she hasn't chosen? If so then I probably wouldn't.

soupfiend · 07/05/2024 07:56

Its not clear what your dilemma or question is

Are you asking if the amount of shoes she has is OTT and to buy her another pair would be OTT?

Or are you asking if you should buy another pair of your choosing?

It strikes me that she has barely any proper shoes at all, crocs and indoor trainers are not shoes

thedendrochronologist · 07/05/2024 08:09

In that case if her only pair of shoes are trainers that she wears for school then the poor girl needs a least one more pair of shoes!

Buy her some trainers!

If the issue is them being at the front door buy a shoe rack for her or a box! We have two pairs each I the hall on a rack. Walking boots in the garage and the rest in bedrooms.

Not every pair of shoes needs a specific purpose they don't need to be "wet weather" shoes. Sounds like the attitudes of 1970s!

She can't live in her school shoes/trainers 24/7

If money is tight vinted or charity shops or the Nike outlet store. Failing that go to Primark. Shoes for under £10.

Beezknees · 07/05/2024 08:17

Why would this be OTT? I don't get it.

Cat2024 · 07/05/2024 09:32

Got you now, op. Yes, I would probably buy one more pair trainers and sort out storage for them.
