Contraception options, high blood pressure

I'm going to speak to the GP if I can ever get an appointment....

I went in a couple of years ago to discuss contraception, and found out I had high BP which I am now medicated for. I'm now 46, so was told the injection and pill were not going to be suitable for me. I also have hypothyroidism.

I have had endometrial ablation also a couple of years ago but apparently still need to use contraception (I still have periods after this procedure, lucky me)

Just wondering if there's anyone with similar health issues, who has been able to access suitable contraception?

I'd go to your nearest family planning clinic instead of your GP. Some are part of sexual health clinics, so you might need to ring to check if its walk-in or via appointment etc. You'll be seen by a nurse specialist or gynaecologist and they seemed to have more up to date info than my GP, and more time to go through the options.
I'd assume your options include female or male condom, cap or diagram, sponge, spermicide, copper coil, vasectomy or hysterectomy- but speak to an expert.

Find a sexual health clinic - NHS

Find sexual health clinics near you. Check opening times and services offered, including STI testing and emergency contraception.

I thought the injection would be ok as it has no oestrogen in it. Mini pill, implant, coil (copper or mirena type) should be ok

Thanks, we don't have any local clinics so will have to be GP unless i travel further afield - which i might. . Maybe I was too old for the deposit, who knows?

Just interested to hear from others.

Ah the depo does seem to be contraindicated for high blood pressure. Your age would have been fine for it

Mini pill should be OK as it's the combined pill that would be ruled out. Both types of coil should be OK too. Implant is also an option.

You can have a progesterone only method with high blood pressure and at 46. So that’s the progesterone only pill, the implant, the IUS (eg Mirena or Jayden’s coil).

You can have the depo injection as long as no other cardiovascular risk factors eg smoking, obesity, high cholesterol, angina etc.

You don’t need a GP appointment necessarily for contraception, you could see a nurse practitioner if one is available at your practice. Or try a CASH clinic (contraception and sexual health).

Sidge · 06/05/2024 12:07

Oh and you can use a progesterone only method up to 55 so your age alone isn’t a factor.

That's great, thankyou. I was def told no for depo. I had it previously and got on very well with it. I would prefer something long acting so maybe implant could be an option..

At least with the implant or coil you can have it removed if it doesn't agree with you, unlike a jag so defo worth consideration.
