Open to any suggestions on Audible books. What has really gripped you recently? Thanks.

Hi I like crime fiction especially Scottish crime fiction. I'm on the third novel by J M Dalgliesh. All set on the Isle of Skye

Therealmetherealme · 06/05/2024 09:09

I swing between Audible and BBC sounds.
On Audible I've got into more of the true crime, but have a real mix. Here's my last few that I'd recommend.

Queen Bee Jane Fallon
Crossing Places Elly Griffiths
Corrupt Bodies Peter Everett

My favourite listens so far are all very different but loved all of them

The count of monte cristo (really long but so worth the time investment it's amazing)

Strange sally diamond - listened in a day it's amazing

Seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo - not my usual kind of book but I loved this

I'm currently listening to My Favourite Mistake by Marian Keyes. I've never read any by her, but this is the second one I've listened to. She's an excellent storyteller and long car journeys go quickly.

I've recently listened to Three Sisters, which is the third in the Tattooist of Auschwitz series. I also listened to Tattooist a few years ago, but then read Cilka's Journey (the second one). They are all excellent.

The Boys from Brazil was another good one.

I enjoyed Becoming, Michelle Obama's autobiography. She reads it herself.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 06/05/2024 09:37

John Scalzi - Starter Villain (not sure how to categorise this tbh, sort of humorous thriller with talking cats)

Andrew Mayne - The Naturalist, crime thriller, first of a series

We are Legion, We are Bob - Dennis E Taylor, sci-fi, first of a series. I've listened to the whole series twice and I'm considering starting over again as I really enjoy it.

I second Marian Keyes - she tends to narrate her own and is lovely to listen to.
The seven sisters series is fab and all v long so good value.
Also love J K Rowling's detective series, her pen name is Robert Galbraith - the narration is great and the stories are excellent.
Also recently enjoyed a crime series about a female detective by Jane Casey
Finally, absolutely loved listening to a little life and in memorium - both heartbreaking but fabulous

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 07/05/2024 12:06

I like Michael Pollan for non-fiction. He has a lovely soothing voice and he researches things really well.

Dottiethekangaroo · 07/05/2024 12:12

i have just discover Peter Grainger. Lots of his books are free on Plus at the moment. Brilliant narration who really captures the sardonic humour of Sargent Smith.

NeilTayloriscatwit · 07/05/2024 18:28

Strange sally diamond as per pp,
The widow, free at the minute.
I like KL Slater the author too

'Tolkien and the Great War - The Threshold of Middle Earth' by John Garth. It's read by the author, and is about Tolkien as a young man and a soldier in the First World War, and his creation of the first stories of Middle Earth at that time. I've really enjoyed it.

Porridgeislife · 07/05/2024 18:45

If you’re open to non-fiction I’ve really enjoyed Material World by Ed Conway.

Thescarynun · 07/05/2024 19:48

I've just finished I Invited Her In by Adele Parks, read by Joanne Froggatt, who is my favourite narrator.

NoEffingWay · 07/05/2024 20:19

I've been working my way through the free KL Slater's on Audible-they are pretty decent!

CurlewKate · 07/05/2024 20:23

I like to have audio books of very long classics because I find it easier to listen than read. So recently, The Barchster Chronicles, Anna Karenina and Middlemarch.

But I do like to relisten to favorites. So have all the Peter Wimsey stories. Marian Keyes is a good relisten too.

StinkerTroll · 07/05/2024 20:25

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, narrated by Ray Parker is my stand out from the last few years, I absolutely loved it

GerminateMyParsnips · 07/05/2024 20:31

Favourite fiction was the Audible production of David Copperfireld - which is excellent.

Favourite non fiction - currently listening to 1000 Years of Annoying the French - which is also very, very good.

Both were/are very entertaining.

OMG The Heart’s Invisible Furies - the best the best the best! I’m still so upset I’ve finished it.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/05/2024 20:39

Anything by Nigella Lawson; her voice is lovely to listen to

BravoWhiskey · 07/05/2024 20:42

The Beartown trilogy. So good. Was gutted to finish it and I think of Benji every time I get in the car, after many driving hours together.

Thanks for suggestions! Non fiction favourites?

I’m currently listening to The Trading Game by Gary Stevenson and it’s great. He narrates so you have to get used to the accent to begin with but it’s really compelling.

Blackcats7 · 07/05/2024 20:44

The Making of a Marchioness. An old favourite I was very pleased to find on audible.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 07/05/2024 20:45

Rivers of London series - brilliant listening.

I like Anthony Horowitz Hawthorne series but it seems marmite on here.
