Any tips for minimising a cold before a flight please?

I'm on day 2 of a cold- sneezing, coughing (but not persistently), runny nose, headache, puffy face, feeling achy.
I go on holiday very soon, flight is at 6am Wednesday morning for 5 hours. I would very much like to not be the person the others on the flight hate! Sniffing and sneezing. I will happily take a mask with me and wear for the journey where possible.
Any tips on minimising this cold before I get on the plane? I'm currently taking flu max tablets with phenylephrine, paracetamol and guaifenesin (sp) in, which I believe helps move the phlegm off your chest and is certainly helping with the headache.

I find Lemsip works wonders for me. Start today. Have one before you board and as its a long flight get boiled water and have another when appropriate. I only like blackcurrant flavour. I feel it really gets into my bones and l begin to feel better practically straight away. Maybe some vitamin C to improve immune system too.

Codiene is a cough suppressant so take co codamol from the pharmacist before your flight to minimise coughing

Do not take it with lemsip as it has paracetamol in it - so leave four hours after taking either.

Personally I'd avoid the expectorant too as this is more likely to make you cough

Sorry I miss read your OP - this is for the flight itself.

Hot Honey and lemon!

I'm the same right now - full of cold. It's grim.

We currently have the dreaded cough and cold at the moment
We have been drinking hot toddy's , fresh ginger, lemons, and honey which is soothing on a sore throat (we have put a whiskey in the one before bedtime 🤣)

Neveralonewithaclone · 06/05/2024 07:54

I wonder if a piriton might help?

Velvian · 06/05/2024 07:57

Anti histamines help dry up the mucous. Raw garlic and ginger also have some benefits. Apparently, you can cut garlic cloves small enough to swallow and take them with water and you get the benefits. I can't link to where I read that, as I don't remember. 😅

WonderingWanda · 06/05/2024 07:58

Get some berocca down you too!

VestPantsandSocks · 06/05/2024 08:01

Slice up some fresh ginger and put in boiling water with sugar. Drink this 3 times a day and your cold will be gone!

I am exactly the same position as you. If you're flying from LHR we may well be on the same flight - can snivell together 😄
I'm doing alternates paracetamol and nurofen. Steam mental inhalation and trying to rest. Need to pack tonight but hubby did all ironing yesterday.

For the flight I intend to take a sudofed. Throat lozenges to stop coughing / boiled sweets. Big pack of tissues and a bag to discard them in. I will also probably wear a mask although I'm not convinced of their effect - more just to show willing.....

Good luck and hope enjoy holiday x

Antihistamine Allevia plus Sudafed to dry up mucous, and a nasal spray and cough sweets.

OMGitsnotgood · 06/05/2024 08:21

High dose vitamin C, starting today and take during your holidays too to help you recover.

If you still have a runny nose, take a plastic bag on the plane with you to put used tissues in.

I'm useless at sleeping on planes but maybe take some ear plugs and try to sleep on the flight.

You can improve a lot in a couple of days, fingers crossed for you and have a lovely holiday.

Thank you for the well wishes!
The tablets I'm currently taking are a tablet from of lemsip I believe (same ingredients)
From your suggestions:
Stop taking these for the flight and take co-codomol and sudafed to stop any coughing
Today, have honey, lemon & vitamin c
Sudafed
Berocca
Anti histamine
I think I've got all of this except sudafed, so I will pop to Asda
Good reminder to take a tissue bag, and I'll bring some hand sanitiser too

I think I might actually go have a steamy bath too, that'll make the snot flow 😆

I'm also useless at sleeping on planes, and I'll have a 4 year old next to me, so that's prob a fail!

@lovemycbf @BotDranning I hope you both feel better quickly too
