Car parked outside house all day

So there's been a car parked just outside between mine and my next door neighbours house all day, didn't think too much of it until he was still there later this evening up until about 15 minutes ago, he was sat with the headlights on for hours until he seen me obviously looking out the window and then turned them off. It's a very quiet side street and my next door neighbour doesn't know who this either and also finding it odd. I went back into my sons room and peeped out a tiny corner of the window (definitely wouldn't be able to see me looking) to see if he was still there and just caught him finally get out of the car, and then take a picture with his flash on at my house. It was a youngish guy probably in his early 20's in it, I panicked a bit and opened the bathroom window to ask if I could help and he looked back and walked off. Just checked the reg plate and it is invalid.

Am I being ridiculous to be a bit worried about this? My partner (who mostly works away and is often just me and my 2 year old hence worries me a bit more) has just told me not to worry and it's probably nothing, which I might be more inclined to agree with had I not caught him take photos.

What do you mean you checked the reg and it was invalid?

I’d report it to the Police OP. Include the reg and everything. Not to 999 but to 101 or use the online form.

it 1000% is suspicious behaviour and they could have had other similar reports.

I've never reported anything to the police before do you know what would normally happen? Would they turn up to my house (I'm hoping not). I did ask my partner if he thinks I should report it but he's saying there's no need and that he might of seen me looking and took a photo to be funny, it's very highly unlikely he seen me peeping at my sons room, the gap is minuscule and in total darkness.

I think it's highly unlikely the police will turn up at the house based on this incident alone, but I would still report in case it means something to the police when pieced together with other information.

OutOfTheHouse · 05/05/2024 23:10

Report to 101. And take a note of the make and model. Can you film out of the window?

HeddaGarbled · 05/05/2024 23:12

He’ll have had to have walked off because if he had the headlights on for hours his battery will be flat. World’s least competent surveillance trainee?

suss80 · 05/05/2024 23:14

I've just had another look and he's not came back to the car yet, I noticed a car I hadn't seen before yesterday in the same spot but can't say for sure it was the same one as this one today as I didn't take much notice to be honest, it's only because we've been home most of today and I've noticed he's been here for most of the day.

Without sounding too judgy, he did look a bit dodgy and I worry if I report it it could bring more trouble possibly?

If anything the Police may call you but I doubt they’ll just turn up. It’s just worth reporting as if there’s a group of them or if he’s doing this elsewhere the Police will then know.

It IS suspicious regardless of what your DP says.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 05/05/2024 23:23

I'd report it. Could be nothing but it might be something.

Cantdoitagain1 · 05/05/2024 23:23

Any chance your DP is married with six kids and his wife has engaged a PI to track him down?

Just kidding….

I very much doubt it 🤣

He's come to bed and gone straight off to sleep meanwhile I'm lying here worrying about this, man worries about barely anything! I think I will ring and report it just to be cautious, just hope they don't think I sound ridiculous.

I thought you were way over reacting until you mentioned the photo. That is the only thing that is a bit weird. Try entering the licence plate in a few different online free checkers. When I was buying a second hand car recently, the official website said some cars were invalid, but they showed up fine on other search tools.

FatAndFiftySomething · 06/05/2024 01:28

And if you still can’t find it after following the above advice, report it as you can’t drive around with an invalid reg. What if he’s involved in an accident? They won’t be able to trace him.

TulipBluebells · 06/05/2024 03:59

Oh that is really odd - so he was sat IN the car for hours? That alone is a bit odd, then add on the photo? Definitely report - you can do it online.

Mt563 · 06/05/2024 04:28

Any houses for sale? Any chance he's seeing what the area is like? 😬

Santasbigredbobblehat · 06/05/2024 04:33

I’m going to guess he’s either living in his car or selling drugs. The photo might be a was to identify where he is to people. Have people gone up to the car?

I’ve had these issues on my road.

Meadowfinch · 06/05/2024 04:47

The advice from the police is to report everything. Every bit of information helps. You can do so via 101 or on-line.

What cars do you own? Could this be a planning run for a car theft? The fake plate is definitely dodgy unless it was an overseas plate.

Ring the police in the morning.

thedendrochronologist · 06/05/2024 05:51

I'd be worried to OP. Is it normal to have unfamiliar cars on your road - ours is a quiet cul de sac so no on ever parks down here unless visiting people.

Is it old or new car and is there now?

Do you have ring doorbell? Someone tried to break into our last year and it warned us and we disturbed them.

thedendrochronologist · 06/05/2024 05:53

Oh a take car keys to bed with you and consider a crook lock / dislike of you have performance vehicles - speaking form bitter experience.

OPOPONAX4 · 06/05/2024 05:56

Take a picture of his car.

PieFaces · 06/05/2024 06:04

take a photo of him or discreetly record him and car. Get a ring doorbell. Report to police.

Absolutely awful advice. Leave the keys downstairs away from doors/windows but in plain sight. If it’s the cars they’re after you want them in and gone, not paying a visit to your bedroom.

VJBR · 06/05/2024 08:48

I would be more worried that your husband is so dismissive over it.
