Which supplements truly work/ do you swear by?

Over the years I’ve tried loads of supplements/ herbal remedies etc for all kinds of things. Mostly, I haven’t seen a difference in whatever ailment I’ve used them for, if I’m honest.
I do find that blue green algae products are quite good for skin, I like magnesium after a workout . I’ve tried some collagen products that definitely made my skin smoother and softer.
It seems to be an exploding market though and my social media feeds are inundated with new fangled wonder pills, most of which are very expensive (happy mammoth I’m looking at you 👀). Anyone tried anything that’s amazing?
Tell me your wonder pills for glowing health , balanced hormones , a supermodel figure and flawless skin, please !

Anyone? Or anyone tried any of the new fancy perimenopause / cortisol balancing preparations that are all the rage on Instagram?

Is this a sign that nothing really works??

goingdownfighting · 05/05/2024 22:41

Magnesium spray works for sleep. It's amazing. Put on soles of feet before bed but moisturise your feet really well.

Fed up of chronic anemia (due partly to heavy perimenopausal periods, perhaps, but have struggled on and off since early 20s), I have been having good luck with:

Ferrograd C (can get it on prescription but I get it OTC at chemist now)
Very high dose folate
High dose B12 sublingually

Red cell count and hemoglobin massively boosted since I started this three months ago. Had blood test last week.

Also take, but a bit sporadically: vitamin D.
Fish oil
TUDCA for gallbladder/ liver health.

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 05/05/2024 23:27

Magnesium before bed.

I also think vit D helps me too.

maudelovesharold · 05/05/2024 23:30

I take Magnesium L-threonate (there are lots of different kinds of magnesium), and I’m as sure as I can be that it has improved my sleep (not waking up in the early hours) and helped with the non-specific anxiety which used to grip me on waking most mornings. I feel less worried, most of the time, anyway! I also take Vit D3 (with K2).

Shinyandnew1 · 05/05/2024 23:32

Can anyone link to a magnesium that helps sleep-I don’t know which one/which product/which dosage to go for!?

zeddybrek · 05/05/2024 23:39

I swear by oil of evening primrose with starflower. Have taken it everyday for nearly 10 years and it has been life changing for my PMT. My skin also looks much better. No more monthly rage and red mist before my period. It takes about 3 months to work and I tried stopping it twice. Both times my symptoms came back. Absolutely love it.

ilovetomatoes · 05/05/2024 23:41

Solgar high strength vitamin B for energy. It really works.

GauntJudy · 05/05/2024 23:42

I feel so much better when I remember to take spatone. I must be iron deficient, I can really tell if I've missed a dose.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 05/05/2024 23:45

I will say that i was extremely worn out for much of the past 8 months to the point I was really struggling. I have been taking ferrous fumarate (210mg) and while my blood test results aren’t brilliant I have gone from having no iron stores to being just under the point they say is ok. I have probably been taking them consistently every day for about 2 months now. Im also taking a vitamin d spray daily along with making a point of eating well. I was doing none of this a few months ago as I had no energy/interest in anything (bit of a catch 22). I did take expensive magnesium for 3 months (glycinate) a couple of years ago to help with sleep/stress but I didn’t feel it did anything.

This is the one I use. I get it on Amazon. Other brands are available! https://timehealth.co.uk/product/magnesium-l-threonate/

merrymelodies · 05/05/2024 23:49

Vitamin B12, vitamin C, vitamin D...

thehousewiththesagegreensofa · 06/05/2024 00:16

I would have said magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and Spatone but, since being on HRT, I haven't needed them

BrieHugger · 06/05/2024 00:21

Good quality echinacea really does work at the first sign of a cold / sinus / throat problem.

I take an over-50 multi vitamin but no idea whether it’s doing anything. Can’t harm.

RubyGemStone · 06/05/2024 00:30

I too have tried a lot and had some success but the things I consistently take as have found I can't be without:

Psyllium Husk - taken for about 5 years - I struggle to eat a lot of fibre and this makes a huge difference for me.
Ashwaganda - Mood/anxiety
Magnesium Threonate - daily at night, has improved my sleep quality noticeably
Vit D & Iron - Energy, resilience and mood

Also found Collagen and Omega 3 do help my skin but I'd rather pay for botox! Sea Kelp will make your hair grow rapidly, unfortunately all over your body, but does nothing for hair loss.

MegsNaiceJam · 06/05/2024 00:36

For the kids, Sambucol. They have dodged so many nasty viruses going around school, as in they may get something but shorter lasting or less severe or don’t get it at all. Game changer, swear by it.

For me, B12 spray. I was tired all the time, would come home from work and have to sleep. I saw it recommended on here, got some and within a few days I had more energy and wasn’t needing to sleep.

Nat6999 · 06/05/2024 01:02

Magnesium
Vitamin D
Evening Primrose Oil
Starflower Oil
Vitamin B Complex
Biotin (brilliant for menopausal hair loss)
Collagen

Mytholmroyd · 06/05/2024 01:10

I take NMN and pterostilbene as well as magnesium, curcumin, Vits B and D, omega 3 and Lions Mane. Need all the help I can get!

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 06/05/2024 01:10

I'm on HRT. I am permanently anaemic so take 2 spatone in a glass of orange juice every day which definitely makes me feel a bit better. Vitamin D as my levels are v low. Melatonin quite frequently which I swear by.
