Lost luggage

PoppyBloom · 05/05/2024 14:46

My checked in luggage did not turn up on the carousel yesterday when my flight landed (UK domestic flight).

Luckily, it was the return journey so home and waiting for updates but it is a huge inconvenience!

It's been 24 hours and was hoping to hear some positive stories of being reunited with luggage!

Has happened to me a couple of times. Never had an issue, couriered to me within 24 hours (one was the now defunct Air One, the other BA)

I remember once reading about 95% of luggage (or something like that) gets delivered at the end of a flight. What that means is if you have 400 people on a flight, the odds are 20 people will not get their luggage.

The good news is every time I have not had my luggage delivered (many times), it has turned up 3 or 4 days afterwards delivered by courier. Apparently for it to become completely lost is very rare. But that is why you should have your name and address on the case, because the #1 reason for losing it is probably the tag coming off.

There are some rules as to how much you are compensated if it is lost or delayed based on how long you are without it. Look them up.

Did your luggage tag have your full name (first name, second name and middle name if you have one), your address also including the name of your town, the name of your county, the name of your country and your post code, your house phone number, your mobile number and your email address. If it didn't have all of they details on it, write all of them on it in future. It could have happened when you arrived at your holiday place, so also in future, take an outfit in your hand luggage, a top or t-shirt, a pair of jeans or trousers and a pair of shorts, a sundress, a going out dress, a pair of socks, a pair of shoes or trainers, a pair of sandals and underwear. That's happened to my mum before and it happened when we were coming home, she saw a case that looked like hers, but it wasn't hers because they label had a different name on it, and it only had the person's name and address, my mum wrote everything on hers that I told you, and the next morning, my mum got a phone call from the person saying they had her case, and in the afternoon, my mum went back to the airport to meet them and get her case back, and the other person also got their case back that was left at the airport. I hope you get your case back.

Thank you for the responses. Great to hear positive outcomes!

I did not (stupidly) have my name/address/contact details attached to my case but something I will definitely do in future!

Also, great tip on including extra clothing/outfits in my carry on for the outbound journey in case this happens again!!

I'm so relieved that the airline called this evening to advise my suitcase has been located and should be delivered tomorrow morning! Thanks again for the positive vibes!!

I have always been told not to have your address on the outside of your case. The theory is that people wait at check-in, clock your address, call an accomplice and you likely get burgled especially if they see a family. For the same reason I always order a taxi to the airport to a different number in my street or I pretend my other half is not coming with me. Think I shall add a post-it inside going forwards.
