Why is Spiderman so popular?

Been to soft play today, so many kids in Spidey t-shirts compared to other superheroes. I'll concede mine are in Spidey Kids but I don't know why they prefer him over the others and they're not that erudite.

Also had a Spiderman at the party all the kids loved. I don't think Iron Man would have gone down so well and Thor is more for adult parties 🤣

Because Spiderman does whatever a Spiderman Can 🤔?
Dunno....who knows.
My daughter currently has a crush on is obsessed with The Riddler from Batman.

Spidey and his amazing friends is quite a good cartoon. There's not a mainstream iron man one is there? It's more geared for adults.

Saying that, I just got my son and ironman costume for the Disney store and he's been wearing it everyday!

Echobelly · 04/05/2024 19:07

Merchandising-wise I guess Spidey has a strong image. I expect a lot of the kids wearing it haven't any specific engagement with the character, but it just makes for good t-shirt/hoodies etc.

He’s got radioactive blood too. I can see the attraction.

Squishwallow · 04/05/2024 19:09

Because Spidey and his amazing friends centres Spidey. The amazing friends (iron man etc) are relegated to bit parts.

Cerialkiller · 04/05/2024 19:09

He's more of an everyman the the other heros. Has more personality, humour and nerds identify with him over say...super man. There's been a rash of superman films and TV series recently too. Avengers, the three tom Holland films, spidy and his amazing friends is an animation aimed at very young kids so that's your most likely culprit according to what mine watch.

Cerialkiller · 04/05/2024 19:09

Theres been a rash of Spiderman films!!! Autocorrect!!

Evolutionarygoals · 04/05/2024 19:10

I assume it's because spidy and his amazing friends is the average 4 year old's gateway into the marvel universe. Certainly why mind is obsessed with spidy anyway. Other (non-marvel) superheros don't have so much merch, which I'm very thankful for!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 04/05/2024 19:11

Superman takes himself a little too seriously I’m afraid. Spidey is more laid back and approachable.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/05/2024 19:15

He's a teenager, not an adult, who has girlfriend issues, is an orphan in familial care, SPOILER ALERT loses his surrogate father figure/grandparent (if you go by the cartoon version) and is trying to navigate studying, getting his first job and all the crap from his friend's dads and other grown ups.

He's one of them, not an impossible (and yes, I know that radioactive spiders conferring superpowers is impossible, but bear with me) God-like creation like Superman or Thor and isn't obscenely rich like Batman or Iron Man.

And being Spiderman means a cool red/black or red/blue outfit and climbing things, dangling from stuff and scrambling around. Perfect small child play. The original theme tune is a banger, which helps too...

The other one that's very accessible is Hulk, as it's being weedy and small but becoming very powerful when experiencing powerful emotion - anger. And smashing things. Plus having Hulk hands for your birthday is cool.

But it's a fairly new show, and it was the same when DS was little.

I did ask DH. He said "because Spiderman is the best superhero. Obviously."
Helpful.

I think most of that would go over your average EYFS / Infant kid but I reckon you've got it with this "And being Spiderman means a cool red/black or red/blue outfit and climbing things, dangling from stuff and scrambling around. Iron Man and the Avengers haven’t been in a new movie for a good while where as Spiderman seems to be on an upward trajectory with both Tom Holland and the animated Miles Morales films. I think little kids like bugs too so they are happy to wear a spider motif on their clothes.

Squishwallow · 04/05/2024 19:32

From a marketing perspective the blue, red and web pattern is very recognisable and can be plastered across anything from pens to cars. It's harder to see green/purple things as hulk or red/gold things as iron man in the same way.

frozendaisy · 04/05/2024 19:42

Spiderman is more relatable as a kid because he is a teen. It's easier to understand, spider bite, powers, saves his neighbourhood.

It's the starter superhero, they get into more complex characters as they get older.

TeaMeBasil · 04/05/2024 19:57

He's just the best one....not sure why you're wondering to be honest - it's all about Spider-Man! Grin

the Spiderman obsession in young kids predates the lack of Marvel movies, and tbh surely kids of KS1 age are too young for them anyway. I know there's the parent influence at play (DH) but they're too old to be developing new favourites based on the movies.

I think the easily identifable marketing tool that is the costume, the whole bug thing and the fact he jumps around like the best parkour runner they'll ever meet must edge it over the God that is Thor lol
