Urgh what kind of creature / rodent / bird is leaving these droppings

I have a storage space in the house I hardly use but have heard increasingly weird noises coming from.

Im terrified of rodents so have very very gingerly cleared space. There’s clear evidence of rats (shredded books/cardboard), but there is also feathers and then this, absolutely everywhere! It looks like kernels of corn, it’s in heaps all along the edges of the walls.

There are rafters from the roof and access for a whole host of whatever.

any idea ?

Mouse?

ILikePistachios · 04/05/2024 14:27

Looks like mice or rat droppings to me

MargaretThursday · 04/05/2024 14:28

Looks too big for a mouse to me. Rat or squirrel.

It's hard to gauge scale, but they look too big to be mouse droppings. And they're definitely the wrong shape.

BaronessBomburst · 04/05/2024 14:30

We found this, droppings and grains, under a pile of branches we cleared from the garden. They were stacked up against the house next to the window and I often heard noises late at night.
We thought it was a dormouse or shrew. It's unlikely to be a shrew in your case as they don't like to come in, unless it's very cold.
or they're chasing a dormouse to kill and eat it. Not what you want to hear on your bedroom ceiling at 3am

takemeawayagain · 04/05/2024 14:31

Are you sure corn hasn't been stored in there at some time and things are getting in there to eat what's left of it? I don't know any poo that looks like corn - not that i'm an expert! I would completely clean the floor and the lack of food (if it is food) might lead to whatever it is not coming back.

96thstreet · 04/05/2024 14:31

I don’t think it’s a mouse. We’ve lived with them for years and I know their noises - this is too loud for a mouse.

Squirrel isn’t a bad shout, do they shred stuff to make nests?

Could be hedgehogs. They tend to have small dark droppings.

Sorry should have said it’s on the second floor! Bloody good climbing for a hedgehog

Too big? Oh god, then it was the marten.
We've caught him on the security camera more than once.

Slightly sidetracking for a moment OP, sorry

@BaronessBomburst are you saying shrews eat door mice?! I always assumed the little cutie pies ate flowers and grains! I don't think I'll ever be able to look at them again and think "awwh, little darlings"

dizzydizzydizzy · 04/05/2024 14:35

A rat eating corn and leaving the husky bits behind?

cryinglaughing · 04/05/2024 14:35

Could be owl poo, that is pretty big, if there is a way for an owl to get in if course.

BaronessBomburst · 04/05/2024 14:35

Shrews are vicious buggers and hunt smaller rodents, yes.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 04/05/2024 14:40

I think it's squirrel. Rat poo tends to be a bit pointy at the ends

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 04/05/2024 14:44

Bat possibly

Hedgehogs are remarkably good climbers - especially when they’re trying to escape their rescue cage 🙄. But maybe not that good and their poo is waaay bigger and messier than that. Pretty sure it’s squirrel poo and they definitely leave behind half chewed kernels, nut casings etc, and yes they do also use feathers for nest material.

siameselife · 04/05/2024 14:49

Yes squirrels shred stuff. One broke into our cupboard under the stairs once, it was on an outside wall and shredded a box and it's contents to make a nest.

Ok I’m going back in <eeekkkk>

Do they knock politely, these door mice? 😀

Could the feathers be from a bird that’s been eaten though? By whatever ‘thing’ you’ve got in your house! 💀

CosmosQueen · 04/05/2024 15:29

I’m pretty certain that’s rat poop 🫣

Roundandroundthegard3n · 04/05/2024 15:31

Almost certain it's rat.
