Oh my fucking god, close shave with expired passport

We’re travelling on holiday 14th June. Just sat out in the lovely sunshine in the garden and I was suddenly struck out of nowhere with the thought that my husbands passport must need renewal this year.

Checked and the date of issue was 14th August 2014!

It says it expires may 2025 but those extra months don’t count any more.

Online application hastily done and crossing fingers now that it comes back in time.

I still feel sick - not as sick as I would have if we’d rocked up to the airport with it 😱

OP posts:

Can people not read?

it expires in May 2025

The issue date is within 10 years of when they travel so the old one woudl, have been fine to go with.

No it would NOT have been fine because it was issued on the 14th August 2014 and ten years from that date is 14th August 2024, the extra months added are irrelevant, they are NOT counted for travel in the EU therefore he would not have had the required validity for travel.

Well spotted and well done for renewing it @Vampirebats .

They’re travelling in June 2024, in advance of the 10 years from issue which will be in august 2024

PlacidPenelope · 04/05/2024 19:01

Yes, but it is not valid under the new rules requiring three months validity before leaving because the extra months added are not taken into account therefore Customs in the EU will deem it as expiring in August 2024 which is not three months beyond June.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2024 19:04

@PlacidPenelope the 10 year rule is only for entry into the EU. You go by the actual expiry date when working out if 3 months are remaining when you leave the EU. It's not 3 months from the 10 year date you have calculated.

Mellowautumnmists · 04/05/2024 19:06

@PlacidPenelope it is a two tier test. You look at the issue date when you enter the country. When leaving you look at the expiry date:

I think the passport office are one of the government departments that have totally upped their game. My DD's new one, changing from a child to adult one, was received in 9 days im sure so I think you'll be fine op

Peanutsalty · 04/05/2024 19:43

People are getting very confused on here and PP are making very rude comments about PP when they themselves are clearly not understanding WTF they're talking about

If your passport was issued on August 2014 it expires August 2024 even if says March 2025

If you are travelling to a country that requires 3 months left on your passport on your return date from that country then your passport has to have a full proper 3 months or left or mine

So you would have to have a return date in May 24

May - June = 1 month
June - July = 1 month
July - August = 1 month

Total 🟰 3 months

Peanutsalty · 04/05/2024 19:46

@dementedpixie you talking absolute nonsense and woefully incorrect

@Muchtoomuchtodo again you are also completely wrong and utterly misinformed

Peanutsalty · 04/05/2024 19:47

@myfavouritemutant another misinformed completely incorrect plus very rude PP

bevelino · 04/05/2024 19:48

daffodilandtulip · 04/05/2024 13:46

Ours took ten days last week 😊

This

Mine arrived 7 days post online application.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2024 19:49

@Peanutsalty you are the uninformed rude person. From the .gov website:

Your passport must be:

  • issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the ‘date of issue’)
  • valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the ‘expiry date’)

The 2 are separate from each other so the expiry doesn't need to be within the 10 year period you have calculated

TroysMammy · 04/05/2024 19:53

Lucky you knew where the passports were. It will soon be the threads appearing "Where's (insert family member's) passport and we are going abroad in 3 days time?"

Believe what you want to believe

Some people beggar belief

I have no words

Vampirebats · 04/05/2024 13:47

We’re going to Greece, I think you need a further 3 months on it.

6 days for a child renewal for us a few weeks ago! Good luck OP!

christmascalypso · 04/05/2024 20:04

@Peanutsalty You have misinterpreted the information. See below.

dementedpixie · 04/05/2024 20:13

Are the “issued less than 10 years ago” and “valid for three months” rules combined?

No. There is no need to have a passport issued less than nine years, nine months ago. The two conditions are independent of one another.

The Migration and Home Affairs Department of the European Commission in Brussels told me: “Entry should be allowed to those travelling with passports issued within the previous 10 years at the moment of entry into the Schengen area.

“The condition that the passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years does not extend for the duration of the intended stay. It is enough if this condition is fulfilled at the moment of entry.

MrSand · 04/05/2024 20:24

I don't imagine @Peanutsalty is going to change her mind, but for the benefit of any other readers - her interpretation is completely incorrect. The other posters are giving the correct rules.

Are you saying that the .gov website has it wrong then?

Pussygaloregalapagos · 04/05/2024 20:46

That passport would have been fine. Passport office has had a full revamp they are super efficient now takes 1 to 3 weeks to get a new passport. Also you can just stick old one in letter box don’t need to go to post office.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/05/2024 22:11

@Peanutsalty just because you keep saying it and think that you’re right, in this case you’re not.

It’s very obvious that the post Brexit changes to passport rules for travel to EU countries continue to confuse a lot of people

ENTRY TO EU: IF TRAVELLING TO AN EU country your passport is valid for entry 10 years from the ISSUE date (check printed issue date).
EXIT THE EU: EU countries require 3 months left on your passport on the day you return to the UK (check printed expiry date).
If you have extra months on your passport you CAN take the 3 months from the extra months so use the printed expiry date on your passport for return.

IF TRAVELLING OUTSIDE OF THE EU your passport is valid based on the EXPIRY date on your passport, the issue date is NOT relevant if you are travelling anywhere outside of the EU.
Different countries have different rules on the length of time in a passport, eg Turkey require 5 months (150 days) left, USA just ask it’s in date, so check on UK gov website for the rules on passport validity for the country you are travelling to.

CHILDREN PASSPORTS (5 year passports) are always under 10 years old, so just always use the EXPIRY DATE for when checking validity.

StarlightLady · 04/05/2024 22:27

modgepodge · 04/05/2024 17:48

Does anyone know why the expiry date is actually not the expiry date?! Why do people have to do all this maths to work out whether their passport is valid?! Imagine how easy it would be if you could just…use your passport up until the date it says it expires?!? 😲

Because of Brexit!

Longlazyday · 04/05/2024 22:31

Why are you responsible for your husband’s passport to the extent you ‘sick’ at the thought of the impact when arriving at the airport.

I hope your husband is thankful for your diligence in thinking about the details.

You wouldn't feel sick at the thought of the holiday being ruined? Really? The OP doesn't say she is responsible for it, she says it was just a thought out of the blue. Why are people so keen to make this into something it probably isn't?

SeriaMau · 04/05/2024 22:59

Mercurial123 · 04/05/2024 16:57

Does your husband not check his own passport? I'm amazed how often this happens on MN.

It’s funny, but DN is full of stories about wives not checking their own passports. How odd.

Luckingfovely · 04/05/2024 23:26

I've done two passports in the last couple of weeks, one took four days and one took two days. Madly efficient!

So much quicker and easier to do it online though.
