Help! Toddler says it hurts when she wees!

YummyInMyTum · 04/05/2024 11:17

My 3.5 year old this morning pointed to her vulva and said it hurt. She’s just now had a wee and said “my wees hurting”.

What do I do? How can I help? I don’t even know what it could be. It’s Saturday on a bank holiday weekend 😬

It could be a UTI. I would call 111 for advice, or see a Pharmacist.

YummyInMyTum · 04/05/2024 11:27

Okay, thank you! I’ve called 111. Just wary that they always seem to send you straight to hospital 😬

I agree it sounds like a UTI. Pharmacists can now prescribe antibiotics for adults but doubt they would with a very young child. Definitely a 111 job as she probably needs antibiotics. I hope you get sorted soon and she’s soon feeling more comfortable

Glad you phoned. I’d hope it would be your nearest OOH centre. Is DD unwell or just getting burning when weeing?

Brighteyedtriangle · 04/05/2024 11:31

Get her to drink alot today to flush it out if it is.

As a side note, I thought my little one had a uti was crying with pain at night and said it hurt when she weed. So I automatically thought uti. It came back clear and abit of research I found worms can do the same to girls soreness down there. It was worms and a couple of days after treatment she was fine.

It sounds like a UTI. My DD got them a lot as a toddler. We realised she would try and stop drinking so she didn't have to do a wee but it's better that they keep up their liquid intake so we used to give her squash (which she wasn't usually allowed) to encourage her to drink.
They may well need a urine sample to check. If you're going to need to do it at the appointment, perhaps make sure she's in leggings/trousers so you're not having to hold the skirt out of the way whilst you try and catch the wee. And make sure you're in something where you can roll your sleeves up easily voice of bitter experience

gamerchick · 04/05/2024 11:34

Yeah id put worms in there as well as an reason. Hopefully whatever it is is soon sorted

YummyInMyTum · 04/05/2024 11:51

Thank you all, OOH is going to give me a call back soon.

She’s happy in and of herself, no fever, doesn’t seem to be in any other pain…

My DD used to get this a lot when she was little. Lots of water and also cranberry juice( not squash- the actual juice) used to do the trick.

If that’s what they say, then she needs to be seen.

Please ignore this. UTIs can progress rapidly, they usually require antibiotics.

YummyInMyTum · 04/05/2024 12:18

Thanks! DD refuses to drink anything but water anyway.

Seeing the doctors in a couple of hours so will see what they say 🤞

Had it with my daughter recently. Was advised to get her to drink lots of water and ask her to wee often. Definitely helped because she said it didn't hurt any more 24 hours later.

YummyInMyTum · 04/05/2024 12:27

Oh that’s good to hear. Did they give her antibiotics?

lollydu · 04/05/2024 13:01

It could be a UTI but have you actually had a look? My daughter often gets a bit thrushy/sore down there and it's actually the wee trickling on sore skin that hurts. Usually a big slathering of sudocreme sorts her out, weve also been to GP thinking UTI and been prescribed thrush cream xx

Roomination · 04/05/2024 13:02

Glad you’ve got an appointment. If she has an infection she should get antibiotics as it’s a bacterial infection and you don’t want to give it the opportunity to travel any further up the urinary tract. If she drinks regularly it will help to make going to she loo feel a bit less burny when she needs to wee.

WellExactly2 · 04/05/2024 13:16

I bought uti test sticks on Amazon so I can test this myself at home.

Sometimes it can be vulvo vaginitis, so the wee is stinging her, but not actually a UTI - it's pretty common in young girls. Lots of baths, cotton clothes, no bubbles etc in the bath and that helps.

Roomination · 04/05/2024 13:20

KnottyKnitting. Drinking lots of liquid will dilute urine and make it less painful to wee but if there’s an infection it needs antibiotics. It might clear up on its own but it also might travel higher into the urinary tract and into the kidneys which is really serious. A UTI is an infection in the lining of the bladder and causes the bladder walls to become inflamed and irritated and painful. The infection is often detectable in the urine but it’s not the urine itself that’s the source of the infection. There’s no evidence that cranberry juice can cure a UTI once it’s started.

Yeah, I had a look and it looks absolutely fine, it’s not red or sore or anything Confused

That’s what I was worried about, I didn’t want to leave it and think she’d probably be okay in case it got any worse as I’ve had them myself and they can be quite nasty.
