Referring to yourself in third person with a child?

We have a lovely 2 year old nephew and I have noticed that his parent refer to themselves in third person with him, like give this Mummy instead of give it me. All the time. Now that he is speaking, he is doing the same thing about himself, for example instead of saying it’s my turn or it’s my toy, he says it’s Jimmy’s turn or toy.

It has never even occurred to me to do this when DC was little, so I was really surprised when I picked up on that. Is this normal and why do this? We do not go about doing this as adults and say to our DH “listen to wife” instead of listen to me?

Pronouns are hard for little ones - I think people do this instinctively to be clear to the child. It usually wears off as the child matures.
