Anyone else love looking at random places on Google Earth?

I know this may sound sad, but I love looking at random places I've never been to doing satellite view and then street view. Usually after seeing a travel post on Instagram.

Recently looked at Cuidad Juarez on the Mexican/USA border and was blown away by the size of it and how populated.

I also did a tour of the Florida Keys as I can't afford to actually go there 🤣.

Currently going round some random island near Fiji. Very beautiful.

Any suggestions or fellow Google Earth fans so I don't feel so alone? 😀

I like doing this!

Have you played Geoguessr?

CeeJay81 · 04/05/2024 07:56

Me too. I've always had an interest in other places though, used to love looking at atlases as a child and can name every country and almost every capital city in the world. Not much good for anything apart from answering questions on game shows lol.

Also loved doing geoguessr for a while, was really good fun, so definitely recommend it.

I love looking at google earth! I took a trip to the great wall of China from my bed!
The view was horrific though. A man had his penis out! Not ok!

Me too!! DS and I are both obsessed, it started during lockdown for us. I am also fascinated by the US/Mexico border (the contrast, the poverty 😥) and also Senegal, Bhutan, Brazil.

Whaat? I've never seen anything like that on my travels 🤣.

This Geoguessr game sounds like it could be addictive!

We were watching a documentary on tv. I looked GWC on google earth. I jumped out of my skin. DP glanced over and said 'who is that' clearly in the moment he panicked. So I showed him. Think he would have preferred me to have not shown him and let him believe another man was sending me nudes 😂

I love doing this!
Dry Tortuga national park/fort at the very end of the Florida Keys is a favourite destination, in case you haven’t seen it.

Me too. Pre smart phones, I used to 'read' the paper AA travel map on trips away in our camper van.
I now often think "I'll check out Whitby / Area51 / North Korea / The Shetland Islands / The Hamptons/ Slough! on Google maps and have a little look around on StreetView". Then, as an added step, if you have a look on RightMove to familiarise yourself with the property market there, the story is complete!

Amx · 04/05/2024 08:23

Do you just download Google earth and put in random places?

Download it and explore!
you can search for specific places, but you can also move it around and zoom in anywhere.

I love doing this too! My son has got a VR and there's an app on there called Wander. It's exactly like Google Earth, but it's amazing with the VR headset.
I went to Times Square, Sunset Strip and some random Mexican town, it felt like I was really there!

I love looking at tiny islands in the Pacific ocean.

You can download Google Earth.

If on my phone I also use Google Maps and go to satellite view and zoom in to places that look interesting. You can do street view and have a great nosy look around!

I always do that if going on holiday...look at all the gorgeous villas in Portugal and dream!

I love your dedication to checking out Right Move!

I can loose hours of my life doing this.
Last week I was looking up all the different towns that Laura Ingalls Wilder (Little House on the Prairie) and her family lived in. They never lived anywhere that developed into a big town - still all tiny little places.

TeamPolin · 04/05/2024 11:03

I love looking at really the remote places, spent ages looking at the northern border between Finland and Russia recently and the far far north of Canada...

I was going to suggest this. Just recently got into it and currently exploring just the UK. My geography and map-reading skills are absolutely crap.

I used to live in Australia and whenever I sold something on eBay to someone who didn't live in a city I would look it up on google earth. It was fascinating to see all of these remote places. I bloody loved it.

It started when I sold some reading books to a teacher at a school and the shipping instructions were so bizarre because I had to send them to some tiny airport and then she was going to drive five hours or something crazy. So I had to look that up!
