‘Exotic’ holiday where I won’t get a dodgy tummy?

Hi, I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations of a nice holiday destination where I can experience some new cultures (I’ve done most of Europe already) BUT I have some medical issues and really cant risk getting food poisoning or stomach bugs… any suggestions? Every time I think I’ve found somewhere I hear horror story’s and I really don’t want to spend my holiday in hospital! Thanks so much

Cuba? Had no issues there

Don't eat meat usually does the trick

Difficult to avoid. I often get them abroad, hot weather, change of diet.

Portugal is the only place where I've escaped one.

Crikey. Do you have health issues? I'm not sure it's that normal to get sick every time you go on holiday.

That's a good Idea friends daughter did a six week photoshoot in Nepal. She only ate cooked hot vegetables, her adventurous colleagues had two or three episodes.

I’ve always been fine in India, eating freshly cooked vegetarian food and being careful about water.

Jamaica is a favourite country of mine. The beaches, the people, the food, music and culture. I've been 3 times and never had any issues! Not sure if it makes a difference but we've always stayed at 5* resorts there, the ice is made with bottled water and cleanliness is exceptional.

Yea that isn't normal.

I work in a lot of places that people get food poisoning in, and with a bit of care you can generally avoid trouble. Make sure you wash your hands before eating. Avoid salads, ice in drinks, seafood that is not freshly prepared, any food that has been sat out for a while (so AI buffets a really bad idea.) Hand hygiene, both yours and the kitchen and waiting staff’s, is the most important thing. Treat any buffet that has been sat out for a while as suspicious. If you can see the food being prepared in front of you, it is generally better, as freshly cooked.

Other than that, don’t eat huge amounts in one go. I see people in AI resorts eating huge portions, and wondering why their digestive system is rebelling against it.

I wouldn’t rule out anywhere in the world really for food poisoning. However, it’s the all inclusive resorts that you have to be careful with. Of all the places I work, the worst for this is the Dominican Republic.

Japan. Very different culture but no worries about food hygiene.

missshilling · 03/05/2024 23:08

Singapore.

whiteroseredrose · 03/05/2024 23:10

Yucatan in Mexico. We were all fine - but are all veggie.

TakeMe2Insanity · 03/05/2024 23:12

Singapore! They are totally on the ball in terms of cleanliness and food hygiene.

SqueakyDinosaur · 03/05/2024 23:14

Definitely Japan if you can afford it. You will be offered some weird stuff but it will all be 100% hygienic.

Hawaii, Singapore, Mauritius, South Africa, Fiji, New Caledonia, Dominican Republic, Tropical top of Australia

BrummieCahoots · 03/05/2024 23:18

I'd agree with not eating meat. I've been fine everywhere.. eat anything in Europe but went to Thailand and stuck to veg. Was fine .

kitsuneghost · 03/05/2024 23:18

I think you can get food poisoning anywhere. I don't think it is a location thing. It's just bad luck.
The only time I have had food poisoning is at home.

Penguinsa · 03/05/2024 23:22

I've only had food poisoning once on holiday (France) and normally if you are careful you should avoid it. I've had cancer, chemo etc so am vulnerable but since then I've been to Maldives, Mauritius, Azores, Portugal, France elsewhere with no issues. I do read hotel reviews first. Also take hand gel and put on before eating especially if a buffet. Buffet I would get there close to start time and if there's been issues I avoid things like chicken. Previously been to Australia, Costa Rica, Martinique, Cape Town, Singapore, Brazil and lots of Europe. Also Cuba though there the chicken was undercooked but I was OK, worst food ever.

CJ0374 · 03/05/2024 23:34

In addition to eating where food is prepped in front of you, don't have salads/ice etc- eat what the locals do and what local chefs know how to cook. Don't order a chow mein in Mumbai or a Carbonara in Nepal! The majority of times I've seen people get sick is from eating non-local foods.

steppingout · 04/05/2024 00:05

We went to Costa Rica with zero issues and the food was delicious! And I'm someone where just the change in routine or tiredness can unsettle my stomach.
