How would you dispose of these bodies?

Can you please help settle this debate in our family?

My mum’s cat seems to be single handedly controlling the rabbit population in her neck of the woods. This week he’s brought no less than five dead rabbits into her house, and she mentioned that she had put these all in her green (garden waste) bin. I said that I’m not sure you should do that, but she doesn’t see why not. I couldn’t say exactly why - maybe that it doesn’t seem very sanitary for composting, with all the parasites they get and all that, though it is organic matter. I thought maybe bag them up and put in the general bin (goes to incineration rather than landfill). My DH says lob them over the fence, but then the cat may well just find them and drag them in again.

WWYD with all these rabbit carcasses?

I thought this was going to be how do I bury my husband without getting caught thread. 🤣

Me too 😂

I was going to suggest finding someone who does pottery and using their kiln. Apparently, they heat higher than the average crematorium = nothing left.

Would work even better on rabbits I guess.

Keep the bloody cat inside and stop it terrorising the local wildlife?

This. I'm presuming it has a bell on its collar so at least its prey have some sort of warning to their impending demise?

tbh sounds like the area is over populated with rabbits, and cats controlling them will be healthier for them in the long run.

I would agree with leaving them out overnight - with the cat inside! Scavengers will have them most likely

snowlady4 · 04/05/2024 05:22

In my area, the Council will collect dead birds so I'm guessing the same for rabbits? I wouldn't mix with the compost! And I wouldn't put in the black bin- you will end up with a liad if flies/maggots I think.

Scintella · 04/05/2024 05:25

Gawd double bag them! - surely if you leave them on the ground they’ll rot away in a few weeks - double bagged they’ll last forever and the animals and insects that would feed on them can’t get to them.
Chuck them in a large wood for foxes or badgers.
I live in the country and roadkill is removed by raptors the same day. Larger animals last a few days / weeks in the verge.

Me too 😂 I do watch too many crime shows so am full of ideas.

None for a rabbit though.

onwardsup4 · 04/05/2024 06:08

Out of interest how big are the rabbits it's bringing back ?

ManchesterBeatrice · 04/05/2024 07:20

@Funnywonder not particularly, plenty of animals kill the animals, it's just gross isn't it, hence the ugh, like dogs are gross too, with their scavenging. I love all animals though.

Cats are lush.

Can you not take it to a vet for them to deal with? I would not be putting it in a bin or anywhere else.

Can you take it to a private business for them to pay and dispose of for you? Really?

It’s dead wildlife, it goes in the black bin.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 04/05/2024 08:35

Thank you OP, I woke up with a migraine and toothache and your post made me lol loudly. I can't stop laughing at the thought of your Mum's cat single handedly controlling the rabbit population! Sound heavily commited to their role in the community. Cat Sherrif of the the woodland?

emmetgirl · 04/05/2024 08:45

I really thought this post was going to be about something else

AliceKyteler · 04/05/2024 08:51

As pp have said leave out for wildlife to eat. The animals are already dead and waste is horrible. Plenty of birds of prey, foxes, stoats etc will take and be very grateful for it.
If possible leave out of the way of any main dog walking routes. It can freak the hell out of someone if their dog that wouldn't hurt a fly proudly brings a headless rabbit out of the bushes to plop at their feet.

PuppyMonkey · 04/05/2024 08:54

Nothing of use to add but I’m just really jealous of all the people on here who have food bins. So people have normal bin, paper recycling, garden waste AND food waste collections?

We don't even have garden waste! Just recycling (which doesn't include glass!!) and general waste!

Many apologies to the crime enthusiasts who were expecting something slightly darker from this thread.

I am liking some of these creative options. On the mittens theme, as a period drama geek I always rather fancied the idea of a muff for gentle perambulations with the other ladies of the parish. This could be the answer!

I don’t know any potters but I do feel rather more prepared for if I find myself in a murder cover up situation than I was before.

For those concerned about the wildlife, birds I will give you but I’d not lose any sleep over the rabbits. There must be hundreds in the fields at the back of her house and this year seems to be a good one for them. They’re an invasive species and we’ve killed off most of what would be their natural predators. Not sure what size he’s bringing in but he’s quite a big lad.

Given she is rural with no food waste, I agree about leaving the carcasses out for other wildlife to eat.

The number of people who don’t realise that plenty of people, especially in rural areas, have cats especially to keep the rodent and similar pest populations under control.

AnnaMagnani · 04/05/2024 09:04

Depends on her bin collection.

In our area we don't have separate food/garden bins and it is OK to put food including meat and bones in the green waste.

Or it was until they started charging for the green waste bin - councils can't legally charge for food waste so we are now told to put in the standard bin.

There should be a guide on the council website.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 04/05/2024 09:09

@AnnaMagnani I clicked the ‘what do I do with…?’ link on the council’s waste pages. It was not instructive.

More boringly does it have a category for raw meat?

I think the reason they collect dead birds is to try and mitigate the spread of bird flu, so I wouldn't assume it applies to all dead animals.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/05/2024 09:18

Eat them.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 04/05/2024 09:21

Slightly off track, years ago my Dd came upstairs terrified one morning. “Mum there’s a rat in the lounge” There was a carrier bag in the middle of the floor quivering. Cautiously I peeped in. It was a baby rabbit curled up totally unharmed. My arsehole cat had brought it in. Dd wanted to keep it. I trekked across the road in my pjs and released it into the wilds. He regularly brought back dead bunnies, including one completely skinned. Should have renamed him Hannibal.

I think the website is just a duffer actually. All searches return an error.

People on this thread do not have a clue about cats.

'keeping the bloody cats inside'
'getting rid of the cat'
'ugh cats'

What is wrong with people?

Cat-hating- such a joyless waste of a life. Feel sad for them, but at the same time try not to have any next door.

Emotionalsupporthamster · 04/05/2024 09:28

KnickerlessParsons · 04/05/2024 09:18

Nah you’re alright thanks. They’ll be riddled with parasites!

I’m going to see if I can get her to try putting them out for the carrion to test if the cat brings it back.
